Bungie Denies Layoff Claims But Stays Mum on New Game Rumor

An anonymous source claiming to be a laid-off contract worker for Bungie says its next project is an online FPS named Destiny, but the studio says that's not true - it hasn't laid off anyone.

Earlier today, Kotaku Australia [http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/02/breaking-bungies-destiny-is-an-fps-mmo-claims-fired-contractor/] reported on an unnamed individual who claimed to be one of roughly 30 contract workers at Bungie who were fired at the behest of Activision. He said that everyone at Bungie who wasn't a full-time employee, including producers, artists, programmers and most of the IT staff, were given the bum's rush out of the building, after which they discovered that their email accounts had been killed and they were out of a job.

"Bungie can't get away with firing 30+ people, leaving them stuck surprised and having to find new work to feed their families, unable to get unemployment benefits because of the false 'performance related' remarks," he said. "One of the IT contractors let go actually had just won an award for his performance that afternoon."

A tad bitter, perhaps? That may be why the alleged ex-employee decided to get a little payback by spoiling Bungie's big surprise: Destiny, code-named Tiger, a massively-multiplayer sci-fi FPS/RPG. It's a bit short on detail but it sounds pretty groovy and very much like the sort of thing that Bungie, the studio that created the Halo [http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Reach-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA20M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297963329&sr=8-1] universe, might get up to. But according to Bungie, it's not true - the layoff part, that is.

"This evening, Kotaku Australia published a blog entry to their website claiming that Bungie recently terminated as many as thirty contract employees without notice or justification, effectively eliminating all non full time staff at the request of our publisher, Activision-Blizzard," Bungie said in a statement posted on its website [http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=news&cid=30678]. "The claim is false."

"Bungie has never been asked to lay off any employees or contract employees by our publisher, Activision-Blizzard, for any reason," it continued. "The talented professionals who grace our offices day in and day out are the lifeblood of Bungie - our most cherished commodity - and the unsubstantiated rumors posted today are in direct opposition to the culture and values that we believe make Bungie an exceptional place to work, and to call home."

Okay, so nobody was fired - but what about the game? On that front, Bungie didn't have much to say. Nothing at all, in fact. We know the studio signed a ten-year pretty strongly [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100329-Bungie-Signs-Deal-With-Activision], that its next project will in fact be an MMO. But as far as anything more concrete than that goes, we're still stuck fast in "wait and see" mode.

A well-known FPS developer who strongly hinted at making an MMO whose two main franchises are both space-themed? Yeah, I say forecasting that Bungie is making an MMOFPS is a pretty strong guess.

Now bear in mind, I really don't like the Halo games. I think the story is uninspired, the characters suck, and the level design is shit. That being said, the art and soundtrack is well-made, and the gameplay is strong (not perfect, but very pick-up-and-play). So seeing Bungie take on the MMO scene, a scene dominated by RPGs or rather one RPG (WoW, duh), it would be interesting to see what can be done.

Now to create an absolute shitstorm of a rumor: Bungie is making an MMO out of Starcraft. Think about it for a second, and you'll see that Bungie's history and Blizzard's sci-fi universe are an almost perfect fit

I'm going to guess they are making "I-can't-believe-it's-not-Halo" starring power-armoured spacemarines with gruff voices, grizzled faces and hats that prove it isn't just another Halo.

My understanding is that Blizzard absolutely HASN'T been working on a Sci-fi, space themed MMO for at lesst three years now.

Considering the fact that there is a specific time frame on the publishing deal, I'd be more inclined to believe it's gonna be a single player FPS/RPG. Blizzard already stated there is no Starcraft MMO in the works, so yer theory was squashed before it even hit the escapist. But ya, I don't see Bungie doing a MMO, myself. We shall see though.

Man i really wanna punch the douchebag who made up that story. Either was an attempt to ruin Bungie's cred or tried to stir up more hatred against Activision (like they needed it) or just wanted some attention.

I'm really excited to see what will Bungie will do after Halo. My personal hope is a space combat game along the veins of Battlefront II's space battles or the space part of the mission "Long Night of Solace" in Reach. Halo has always been my favorite series and had an awesome universe but I'm still excited to see what Bungie can do with something new.

The other boot into the head of this rumour is that Bungie's business model is based on creating original IPs; they've never made a licensed property in their history, and a sizable chunk of money came their way through licensing fees from books and action figures and the like. That doesn't make working on a Starcraft MMO impossible, but it does make it highly unlikely.

It could be an MMO, but that's not certain... but it does involve a 10-year plan of releases, which hints at staged/phased release of material (episodic, perhaps?) over that timespan. It's likely to be a persistant world game, in any case, given the hints that Joe Staten spread at the last E3.

But yeah, this rumour is completely not credible given the gigantic holes already knocked into it.

DO WANT!

I kind of assumed this ever since Bungie signed on with Activision-Blizzard.

It just makes sense:

1.) Bungie wants to try something new
2.) Bungie just signed on with the company that made the most successful MMO in history
3.) Bungie specializes in FPS games

An FPSMMO was very likely.

Yeah, they've clearly said that nobody's been fired. C'mon... would Bungie just tell 30ish employees to GTFO? They may be partnered with Activision but they're still technically an indie developer.

Activision has very little say in what Bungie's doing.

Well the guy who wrote this said it was "at the behest of Activision" it's unlikely he lied JUST about that (why would he?)

Also, nobody is claiming these people were being fired for misconduct or an inferior skillset, rather it was claimed they were being "laid off" which means budget cuts. Bungie would have to be schizophrenic to lay off over 30 people and then turn right around and say "we're hiring"

So yeah, there's no way what that guy said was true.

Andy baby they didn't deny that 30 people were laid off. They only denied that Activision made them do it. Bungie could quite easily have laid off that many people of their own accord. You're usually better at picking up on this sort of thing

edit: And now theyve updated to clarify that they haven't experienced any mass layoffs or group firings. I'll just hang my head in shame and walk away

Wait, they said they are not asked to lay off employee, not they didn't lay off employee.
