Bungie Digs at RROD in Halo: Reach Tutorial

Bungie and Microsoft may have parted ways, but the Halo developer isn't above taking a lighthearted jab at its former employer's hardware issues.

In case you missed it, there's a new Halo out today - and it's superb [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/8101-Review-Halo-Reach]. This marks Bungie's departure from the fantastically successful sci-fi franchise it created, and also the end of its partnership with Microsoft.

Bungie might have bought itself back from its former owners in Redmond, but there's no indication that their parting was anything but amiable. Still, that's no reason that Bungie can't give Microsoft a friendly little punch in the ribs one last time, right?

As gamers across the world sit down to start playing the hell out of Halo: Reach, Bungie has posted a tutorial on its site [http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=28594] explaining how the armor customization feature in the game works. As with previous games, players can edit their own emblems (I made mine a pretty unicorn!) to display in multiplayer. For instance, shown here is ...

Wait a minute. That emblem looks almost familiar, doesn't it? Hmm, I wonder where I've seen that before. It's almost like Bungie is referencing something notorious in the gamer community, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Maybe I'm just imagining it.

Oh Bungie, you trolls. :D

Would've gotten Reach, but I'm broke and don't own a console... Ah well, maybe some day!

would be kind of funny if someone got a RROD as soon as they finished the tut.

While I applaud the effort, pretending to not remember what the RROD is for the purpose comedic effect at the end of the article seems kind of pointless when the name of the article spells it out for us.

Now that I've gotten my equally pointless nitpicking out of the way: Good to see that Bungie isn't afraid of making fun of Microsoft. But did they do it just for shit's and giggles or is this part of some evil plan to destroy Microsoft!?

Only time will tell...

This is more of a "don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.." to MS than a joke.
Or even a "360/halo players are stupidly loyal, thanks for all the cash".

Does that mean I can't laugh because my xbox has no problems at all? :-(

Microsoft should take note of this. RROD totally sucks for those experiencing it. I recall one friend just instantly throwing his XBOX360 outside the window, from the 4th floor. He had the deceny to extract his game first.
That's pretty stupid of your friend when MS gives free repairs.

Microsoft actually claims that the newer Xbox models are impossible to get a RROD on.

Apparantly its due to them taking the red lights out.

Just a little something I was told, don't take my word for it.

It probably would have been funny if it actually looked like the RROD and was the default emblem on the disc. Otherwise it's not particularly giggle worthy.

TBH, I don't find the RROD all that funny. It's just a hardware fault. Now, what is funny is Japan. Oh, they're so crazy!

This happened recently. That three year warrant didn't apply to him and he was looking for an excuse to get a PS3 anyways. I found it noble of him but personally, I have been collecting a decent library of games, switching over to the PS3 is too expensive.
MS extended all their warrentys for the 360 3 years so yeah your friend was a bit of an idiot.......

A friend of mine did a similar thing to his 360, he threw it out the window (after which it was more or less ok. Wasn't too high up). Then went at it with a hammer. When I called at his house he was spraying de-oderant into any holes. I said to him "You know they fix your Xbox for free."
He replied " I did not know that." and continued to spray...
..strange guy.

Oh Bungie, you may be gone but it'll be like you never left.
Seriously though, I love a game company with a sense of humor about itself.
