Also, politically correct people are most definitely not making the world a better place.
Well, no one is actually being "politically correct". The first guy used the term in the standard American perjorative, but that's just ignorance.
Since this is a pet peeve of mine, I'm going to drop a bit of knowledge on you - the "P.C. movement" doesn't exist. Never has. It's purely political propaganda. If you take the phrase at it's base meaning (and it was actually originated by leftists), an accurate sentance using it would go like this:
"You cannot support equal rights and be politically correct if you are a Nazi."
Sorry for the Godwin, but basically, that's what the phrase means.
The perjorative connation of it was created in 90's during the good ol Culture Wars. First as a perjorative against expanding curriculum at Universities (evil courses, like Womens Studies, naturally) and then later as a general catch-all for any sort of showing deference to without consideration of other sensibilities (It's debatable as to if this is actually harmful, or just annoying honestly).
These days it tends to be used as shorthand for a lot of different concepts, not just things like refering to people as "African Americans" or "Handicapped", but stuff like Global Warming and Gay Marriage.
So basically the phrase itself has been dilluted so much by being used as a propaganda tool that it's lost most of it's effectual meaning. To me, "political correct" may mean something as simple as being considerate of other sensibilities. To someone else it might mean, "people forcing me to be considerate of other sensibilities". To someone else it might mean, "Damn stalinists forcing me to accept their orthodoxy!!"
Generally speaking, I am
not in favor of stifling ideas or having certain topics off limits. This is something President George H.W. Bush famously spoke to during a commencement speech at the University of Michigan as many people may remember. However, I am also not in favor of throwing out the baby with the bathwater either as I think it's an enviable goal for society to be more inclusive of others.
