So I've been trying to get back in my MMOs lately, and I find I'm having trouble.
It seems that every MMO is missing a bit of something that makes me want to keep playing.
WoW has the massive community, a nice detailed and interesting world, and the benefit of being developed over a long time. Unfortunately the core part of the "game" is dull that I quickly lose interest and keep drifting away. In addition, the community, while large indeed....kind of sucks. In comparison, while TERA has the feeling of being alone in an MMO simply because there is no one around, WoW has the worse feeling of being alone even though you're surrounded by people (and goblins.....and elves.....and wolves.....). Chat in many cities is more brutal than most of the fights in the game - Light preserve you if you so much as dare think of asking a question.
Guild Wars was fun, and had a gameplay design I liked, particularly since it wasn't so gear dependent (you can get the best gear stats-wise REALLY early), but then I finished Eyes of the North, and got all my companion armors that I wanted, leaving only the grind for Hero Armors and Weapons, which I wasn't terribly interested in doing - and no one really wants to play or help with those anymore. That, and the insistence and obsession with having one sort of build only for some missions was off-putting.
I'm also a little pissed that Arenanet didn't deem it a good idea to send someone (people) who've had the game since the first expansion came out and have every expansion for the game Beta Invites for GW2, instead only giving them to people who pre-ordered GW2 blind. (Which, to be fair, I'm not against pre-ordering things. But when they're changing as much as they are in GW2, one needs to be sure of those changes before committing.)
SW:TOR? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.......ha......ha......ha.......ha.........ha......yeah.....right. I guess it had good cutscenes.....but that is about it.
Finally, I played TERA, and it was good...for a while. When I first saw it , I was ecstatic. "An MMO version of Monster Hunter? with actual, good production values? And a possibly interesting story? Sign me up Day 1." Combat - fun, interactive and skill-based; particularly for PvP. Graphics? Amazing, and the character and world design was good too - particularly the ladies. But the quests and the story sucked nuts and are SOOOO boring, and the lack of content until now has absolutely murdered the population. Many servers are barren wastelands - good luck finding anyone for anything but high-level content.
So I'm not sure what to do here....its not that I don't like the idea of the MMO......but somehow I can't really get INTO them recently, like I can say.....Skyrim, or Arkham City, or Battlefield 3. WoW does the best, and is arguably the one I enjoy most (and the new MoP expansion looks nice), but I can't help dreading sitting there and literally doing the same thing for every single enemy, everywhere....in every area. The idea that my role in the game could be replaced by a robot is kind of sad, because it makes me an unnecessary part of the experience.
