I don't use burst fire because I prefer to just control how long I fire for. I can squeeze off 3 shots in a row and then stop without being limited by my fire mode.

I'm pretty sure it's mainly for realism. Real guns are never used practically with continuous fire. I admit it is freaking annoying, though.

I wouldn't mind burst fire if it was actually done ok.

I once played this game where if you tap the trigger you fire one round, keep it held a little longer it fires two rounds, then if you hold it down it will fire three rounds then 'lock' itself until you pull the trigger again.
I'm not really sure, but I think thats how burst fire weapons work in reality.

However in games it usually sucks, the BR from Halo 2/3 and the M16 from MW1/2 are ridiculously idiot friendly with pinpoint accuracy at any distance with practically no spacing between the rounds, meaning the gun won't kick up at all while firing a burst.

So yeah, burst fire modes would be nice if done correctly.

I don't mind it as long as it's on a gun that has burst fire in the real world. Otherwise it annoys me to no end.

If it's strictly burst not really. I naturally fire in bursts in most situations, but I like being able to bullet-hose a room when the situation calls for it.

Usually no, although....
I am a beast in CS:Source with the Clarion and burst fire, the thing is a head shot machine.

I don't think any rifle currently in use with a modern military is automatic.

Even if they were, full-auto is absolute crap when it comes to accuracy. You'd end up firing it in bursts anyway. Personally, I like it- it helps keep a cap on my fire-rate, which in turn helps conserve ammo. And you can't tell me you can't spam that button fast enough to make the difference moot.

When it comes to gun stats, burst fire is usually a handicap of sorts designed to allow a gun really high accuracy without sacraficing clip capacity or damage output or any of the other things typical "accurate" guns lose. The M16 in call of duty games being a great example, that gun hits like a truck but has near flawless accuracy, and aside from a somewhat slow fire rate, its lack of full auto allowed for much higher total stats.

So yeah, burst fire is rarely a boon, its usually a tradeoff to create a very well rounded gun.

As far as if I like it..no. If for no other reason than I have this bad tendency to fire and miss the target by like a frikkin half inch, causing me to get owned before it lets me fire again.

While full auto lets me sort of sweep if I miss the initial few shots.

Edit: and yeah, the guy above me has a point, ammo is scarce in real military situations, so full auto is used primarily for supression, most guns are semi-auto.

Eh, the U.S. Navy still uses the M16A3, which is semi and rock-n-roll. Then there's the British forces that use the L85A2, same situation. There's the German forces that use any H&K gun, also semi/auto. Russians use the Ak74, auto/semi. African militaries (if you can call them that) use the ak47 or the ak74. I think Australia uses the Steyr AUG, which is almost completely auto (the semi function is operated by a half pull on the trigger). There's actually only a few that really use a semi/burst fire rifle. The most prominent being the U.S. Marines, and even then their officers are given a choice between the M16A4 and the M4A1, the M4A1 being a semi/auto gun.

I prefer being medium to long range anyway so i tend to burst fire if i'm not sniping

Not that real long range is even remotely possible in any game that's not in the Battlefield series (i think...)

I don't mind it if it's optional. For example, I've been playing Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and I like how you can change the firing modes of some guns from single, to burst, to auto. It makes it so that just about any gun is good for any situation. I can go from a big battle in fully auto to single fire and pick off enemies with headshots.

If it can be done as an option to a weapon rather then a forced attachment and then have it as a balanced alternative then yes,it is amazing

I use assault rifles in most games with a sniper primary. I generally only fire in burst shots anyway. Full auto fire is for spraying bullets like an idiot. :p

Burst fire was introduced because the army determined that whoever had the most firepower in a firefight generally won. Full auto weapons went through bullets too quickly, meaning that soldiers would have to carry excessive amounts of ammo so they created a burst fire. Burst fire was supposed to increase the firepower of squads but keep ammo consumption down, although I've seen many posts from soldiers on the Bohemia interactive forums indicating that they almost always use semi-auto fire leaving the full auto stuff to their squad machinegunner.

I personally dislike burst fire, it wastes ammo at long distances and sucks at close range.

I love burst fire, it helps me conserve ammo (quite the necessity for those nice big killstreaks).

It would be nicer if the games allow you to use the fire selector on the gun to pick if you wanted to use it in either burst fire or fully automatic.

Well, in whatever it's used in, burst-fire is what it is for a reason. For those of you who don't feel like single, but don't want to cut into full-auto, it's a compromise. And yeah, there are times for it. Short, controlled bursts. That sound familiar? Damn right it does, Hudson. If it works in real life, it has a place in the games.

I'll cite an example that isn't an FPS. It's my Survival Horror pick of the genre, Extermination. You start out on single-shot, which can get kind of irritating at times (though fortunately, you have the laser-sight and changeable views if necessary), but then you get the burst-fire upgrade and "Hey, my rifle has more stopping power.". They (the creatures) reel in shock to the bursts and you're conserving ammo, aiming better, and so on. Later on, maybe you have a big ton of ammo just sitting around and...aha...full-auto, baby! And when you can afford it, too!

Burst-fire has its place. Maybe it doesn't do it for you, but I can justify it for me.
