...but I really cannot get into open world(/free roaming/sandbox) games

Everyone says Oblivion is good, Fallout 3 is good, etc etc.

But I really cannot get into them. I find open world games boring; give up Morrowwind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 after 30 minutes. I finish GTA:SA (the only free world game I finish I guess) like a linear game.

Guess I miss a lot of fun, eh?

Anyone else here like me?

Well, it's like my Grandma use to say.

'Only boring people get bored.'

In those games, you really have to make your own fun. Everything is there for you. You just have to go for it.

Well, I sort of understand, I have a very hard time trying to play a sandbox game, the last one I actually finished was Infamous, but I dont generally like sandbox games

Different people like different things, it's ok.

Personally I love Bethesda's games and have sunk an obscene amount of my life into exploring them.

Also, welcome to the Escapist, to both the OP and second poster!

All of this, including the welcomes :)

That's the key thing, though: the exploration. Bethesda's games in particular, but also sandboxes in general, rely on the player to make their own entertainment. This can be good for people who like exploring (me), but potentially bad for those who like their games to actually give them things to do rather than folding their arms, leaning against a well and metaphorically saying "Well? Get on with it!" (you, possibly)

I loved oblivion, I spent like 80 hours trying to become SUPER powerful so I could wipe out entire towns before I discovered npc's level with you, I was gutted.

but you really do have to try and make your own fun to get fun, try to find full glass & ebony armour, that will take you a while :p

different strokes for different folks, basically. Some people enjoy a more goal-oriented game, while others enjoy the freedom of being able to deviate from the given path and screw around a bit with whatever the devs have thrown into the sandbox. You seem to be harking on a specific set of sandbox games though (all by bethesda) and then throw in GTA at the end. There're tons of other sandbox games in many different styles. Bethesda tends more towards the long-winded RPG sandbox games and less the "let's screw around and destroy crap" that you might find in, say, Just Cause 2

Perhaps you are playing the wrong kind. I myself couldn't really get into Oblivion, Morrowind, or Fallout 3. They just really didn't do anything for me (and generally I like RPGs if they are well done). But Saints Row 2 is one of my all time favorite games. And I had a good time with Red Faction Guerrilla. So perhaps it's not the genre you don't like, but the subgenre :)

I like RPGs with big, sprawling open worlds, though I've never played Oblivion and I haven't played Fallout 3 nearly enough. However, I recognise what you're saying; everyone is always going on about what great fun it is to go out and shoot some random dudes in GTA, and they're right, it's fun, but it gets boring so very quickly. There's only so many police officers you can shoot before it gets repetitive. I did finish the game, following the story, if only because in the story missions, you get to do some really awesome stuff (like burn down a hemp farm or steal a Harrier) that you just can't do in the sandbox. Sure, you go to town on a couple of civilians with your flamethrower, and you can try to sneak in again, but it's just not the same - it always devolves right back to "shoot some dudes", nothing more. Eventually, all I was doing was taking my Harrier and flying around the map listening to K-DST and performing stunts, but after a while I was paying more attention to the music than to actually flying. That's when I stopped playing.

It's slightly different for me.

I recently started Oblivion again, got out of the sewer and... what to do next?

Well, usually I spend an hour running around doing nothing before entering the first Oblivion gate and then I start every available quest.

A matter of taste, really. I know one other guy who expressed a similar feeling. His exact words were, 'When I can do everything, I can't decide to do anything'.

Me, I've been loving sandbox games since the still quite linear Body Harvest. This current crop of games is one I'm really enjoying. (Definitively beats last generation's light blooms.)
