Ok so I'm gonna get a 360 elite to replace my old 20 gig, will recovering gamertag allow me to get access to my profile and gamerscore? How do I transfer saves/dlc?

Yes you keep gamerscore etc. If you transfer your gamertag then you can download all the content you previously purchased.

Your gamerscore stays with your gamertag, you have to retrieve it off of xbox live. You need a transfer cable and disc (sold with the separate hard drives) to transfer saves (or memory cards but that can take a long time and alot of effort) but you can re-download DLC but using the cable is faster. You should just buy a bigger hard drive than upgrade console since you don't need the benefits. Elites are mainly for the people that are just getting into the 360 market and want the most.

Don't you have to transfer everything to a external HDD? I know thats how it works with a PS3.

To get saves you have to buy a special data transfer device (or if one of your friends has got one you can beg/borrow/steal it).

Your gamertag does not save your game saves unfortunately, but I think you transfer them using a USB stick or something, you could always check google, or the official Xbox site.

You can either get a transfer cable (they only come with a hard drive that you purchase separately, so you'll have to get a cable separate off of a site like ebay or borrow one from a friend who has bought a hard drive), or you can get memory card, put your saves on that, and then transfer them onto your new 360.

Any help?

When Elites were first released you could get a free transfer kit from Microsoft by sending them a request form. Not sure if that still applies though.

Lots of bad info in this thread. Lucky for you, I just went through this a month ago when my old 360 fell off the shelf.

There is a transfer kit that you can order directly from MS. It takes about a week to ship, costs about $12. Contact XBox support and they'll hook you up.

You can play off your old HDD in the meantime, and the transfer itself is fairly smooth.

New Hard Drives released now DO NOT COME WITH THE TRANSFER KIT. Word to the wise. You may be able to find an old/used one, but honestly, getting your own for $12 isn't so bad.

Ah that looks good, I'll also look into getting one from Microsoft.

Yes, I called the 1800-4-MY-XBOX and requested a transfer kit and they mailed me one for free.
