Thread title pretty much says it all.

I'm planning on buying a PS3 sometime in the near future. Just wanted to see if any of you folks had recommendations or warnings for a fellow escapist.

EDIT: Oh, and I mean recommendations/warnings about the actual console, not about which games I should get.

Depends on what type of PS3 you're going for and if the amount of exclusive titles for it outweigh the multi-platforms.

If you havent already, get Red Ded Redemption. One of the most fantastic games I've played in several generations I think.

That is all.

Try and get a 320GB hard drive, they are far superior. Remember to buy a HDMI cable (if your TV supports it), but be wary of expensive cables. Just buy a cheap cable, around $10 from your local electronics shop. The more expensive cables are worthless, don't buy into them.

If you can get a game bundle as well, they can be quite cost effective.

Otherwise it's your console, do what you wish.

EDIT: You'll probably want one with a bigger memory space, my old one I've had since 2007 is starting to run out, I have even received messages telling me this.

I recommend anything above 200-300GB just to be safe, of course it depends on how much you plan on playing on it and whether you will be downloading a lot of stuff.

360 Fans: You're making a terrible decision. PS3 has no games.
360 fanboys could make that argument back in 2007, but if you look at 2011 where PS3 has had six (Killzone 3, Little Big Planet 2, Socom 4, Resistance 3, Infamous 2, Uncharted 3) exclusives titles that I can think of and the 360 has only had one (Gears 3). You have to be retarded or living under a rock to make that statement now.

I agree with you, but the 360 has had two (with an upcoming third)
Gears of War 3, Forza 4 and Halo Anniversary.

360 fanboys could make that argument back in 2007, but if you look at 2011 where PS3 has had five (Killzone 3, Little Big Planet 2, Socom 4, Resistance 3, Infamous 2, Uncharted 3) exclusives titles that I can think of and the 360 has only had one (Gears 3). No, there's no such thing as Halo, Forza doesn't exist, what's that Fable game I've heard about, F.E.A.R is just a myth hey. Not to mention a large array of great XBLA games that never make it to PSN. Whether you like them or not all comes down to personal opinion but they are there.

Anyway when it comes to a PS3 just go with what games you like. Uncharted is a fantastic series and God of War is always good fun. In the end it's going to come down to what you like and the fact of the matter remains that most of the huge titles everyone buys like COD, BF, TES etc etc are multi platform and it makes little to no difference. Just don't what ever you do, don't pay for PSN+.

Must.... Resist.... Snarky..... Anti-PS3..... Comment!!

Seriously though, prepare for about four solid hours of updates. If they don't fail right at the end.

And be ready for your saved games to get wiped. And for your credit info to be stolen. And for some more updates.

Yeah, I've had bad experiences with Sony...

Superior how? Are there differences other than the size of the hard drive?

Yeah, someone already tried to sell me a $60 cable.

Id get a game bundled 320gig PS3.. think best price you will see right now is $299. I have a 120gig drive and im fighting for free space on it, I am going to have to buy a 500gig drive soon and just toss my info over...so people saying get the 320gig just for the increased space provided.. its still a 5400rpm drive.

That comes with Infamous2.. have also seen Resistance 3, Uncharted 3 packages listed and I am sure you will find some more. Also for Black Friday I am sure there will be PS3 package deals.

The extra space is worth the extra cash if you plan to back up your games/download games.
Even if you aren't it's a good investment.

Ummm? I wasn't trying to invoke any PS3 vs 360 bickering. I own both systems and I find any fanboysm stupid no matter the system. If a 360 owner starting talking shit about how PS3 has no games now in 2011 they're either lying or have never looked into the PS3 aisle at where ever they shop for games, therefor to ignorant to be taken seriously.

Anyways I was mentioning exclusives off the top of my head. I forgot about Forza and Fable 3, but then again I also forgot to mention Ico/SoC HD pack, MotorStorm: Apocalypse, Yakuza 4, Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One, and all the Playstation Move and 360 Connect games. My case in point was there's been a lot more PS3 exclusives this year than there has been 360. But next time I'll do my research and mention every damn game since that's what it seems you want me to do. lol

I have heard that getting the smallest one then buying a bigger hard drive is much cheaper (and you end up with more space) than buying a big one straight out.

You would have to do your own research on that, as prices might be different in your area.

Just something to thinking about

Don't expect to play it for a few days, you'll have to update the system and then the game. Anyways, here are some games you should check out.

God of War 3
Resistance 1/2/3
Killzone 2/3
Sly Collection
Ico Collection
Metal Gear Solid 4
Uncharted 1/2
Infamous 1/2

It's a good console, served me well, many a fun game have been played on it. If you're after instant gratification, and just love action but not so bothered about story pick up Infamous and Uncharted, they're both really fun games and you can get the first instalments of them pretty cheap now.

A good console indeed. My single piece of advice would be, make sure you connect it online, and to an HDTV, and that's pretty much it. Have fun.

P.S.- Oh, and yeah, make sure the HD is spacy. I got an 120gb version when it came out, and that space flies out the window. But then again, I have my HD filled with movies, TV shows, trailers, PSN-bought games and expansions, etc.

doesnt take that long....

and this is coming from someone who has owned a ps3 for years and has only recently been able to hook it up to the internet.

as to the topic at hand, seems kinda late to buy into this console generation. with rumors of the next generation coming out, might want to think about waiting. i mean you have waited this long already, whats another year or so to get all of the details about what the ps4/xbox720 or whatever has in store?

personal experience, ps3 has also served me well. It is easier and cheaper to fix than the xbox if anything goes wrong (only problem i have had with mine in 5 years is a new power supply). If you have any experience building computers, then ps3 is stupid easy to fix (does void warranty though, so beware). Hell, i even got a bunch of free stuff when the whole hacking event occurred. Not to mention blue ray player, which sadly is probably what gets used the most.

xbox on the other hand, ive owned the newer slim version for a half a year and have had a dozen problems or so already. great customer service though, but i suspect i know the reason WHY their customer service is so good.
