every 14-17 English brat that i know uses that word like some sort of insult in a really tacky american accent , and it really gets on my nerves.

Why are brats just 14-17 year old? I know plenty of people that age who aren't "brats" and people who are brats that are older or younger than that.

I use kid all the time, but not like that. Just as a general substitute for "guys" or "people". Just a casual "Hey kids".

I'm sorry, but this bothers me - there is no such thing as an "American accent."
There are numerous accents you'll hear in America, but none that you'll hear all over, I'd wager.

But I try to avoid the news.

I have to agree with that, I went over to the states, heard a boston accent, then heard a new york accent when i was in, surpisingly enough, New york... exactly the same over here, a geordie accent is completely different from say, a scots one. nobody talks like a posh bastard here...
