I knew it would not.... because Obama said he would veto it..... How did everyone forget this?

Obama can't veto everything. If enough votes from the government are for, veto power will not work.

While I'm relieved it didn't pass, I kind of had a feeling it wouldn't. It would take a damn long time to get anything and everything that's pirated off the internet. Plus the internet's amazing. XD

Obama also said he would close Guantanamo bay. Or veto that one "US is a battlefield" bill. I could carry on like this for ages. Politicians lie. Obama promising he will do something does not mean he will actually do it; in fact, you would be safer betting that he does break his promises.

This. Obama has gone back on promises made and stances taken plenty of times in the past and there was absolutely no reason to believe this was going to be any different. To take him at his word is naive to say the least.

It has been shelved. Not withdrawn.
The only way to win against SOPA is to have the congressman that started withdraw it, or have him voted out!

PIPA is still going ahead!
They said they are still looking at PIPA, they haven't cancelled the vote yet, it hasn't been shelved.

And now we have ACTA coming in for it's votes..... WORLD WIDE!

If you don't know what ACTA is, this should sum it up!

Unlike my government, i'll take my victories one at a time. Yes, the SOPA shinanigan is over (read: "shelved indefinately")and we have shown how we feel about internet censorship. Yes, there is also PIPA, BS, etc. but when those pop up we'll knock them down like this one. Keep vigilant, keep voting, and keep signing peitions and we'll stay on top of this. Speaking of which, if there is a peition for non-europeans to sign against ACTA, link it here. I'm sure you could pick up some support ;D.

If I'm not mistaken, the same thing happened with the Patriot Act.
It was 'shelved', then snuck through as soon as everyone looked away.

If that fails, they will just try again with a different name.
Remember the "Clear Skies" act? It actually weakened enforcement of several pollutants. No one thought that 'clear skies' would be bad.
If they change the name of SOPA to say, the "Protecting Online Rights Act," do you think it will have as much opposition?

When they pop up?
The PROTECT IP act gets voted on next Tuesday... That isn't much time...

As for the petition, I'm still looking for one.
I'm Australian, so I can't exactly sign overseas ones either.

Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011

I lol when SOPA and PIPA got this much attention and backlash when a bill that allows ISPs to monitor your EVERY SINGLE TEENY TINY BIT OF THING you do on the internet, thus allowing them to hold information such as credit card numbers, google searches, torrents downloaded, etc. for 18 months and is allowed to hand over to the police at a mere request not only passes but nobody raises an eyebrow about it, nor do you hear a slight bit of opposition online when it's just as draconian, badly written, ambiguous and big-brotherly law as SOPA.

I agree with ya, but there isn't much a internet denizen can do about these things beyond what we're already doing :/. Well media awareness would help but they're more likely to be against us than to support a free internet.

It's a sad reality but these "democratically elected" and lobbyist-approved politicians will continue to try to push this act through as many times as it takes.

What happened to civic duty? The politician's responsibility to his people?

- Rejecting NDAA
- Closing Guantanamo
- Legalising Marijuana
- Raising minimum wage
- Pulling troops out of oversea occupations

These are just a few of Obamas "promises".

Whoa whoa whoa, there's some real half-truths in there, and one utter lie on that list.

First off, NDAA was altered to be more in line with Obama's remarks that indefinite detention would not be included, and secondly, you HAVE to pass a Nation Defence budget. You can't just not have one.

Closing Guantanamo is a valid broken promise.

Legalising marijuana? Never promised that. He promised to respect already established state law regarding MEDICAL marijuana, and has not done well on that promise. But, he NEVER promised to legalise marijuana and I think you know that.

Raising minimum wage? We would have if the House wouldn't cockblock him at every turn, so you can thank them for that particular problem. He hasn't broken the promise so much as the promise was met with incredibly partizan fuckaroundery from the House as a base political point.

And lastly, he has fulfilled the promise to pull the troops out wholeheartedly. This, along with Obamacare is one of the prime examples of major policy promises kept. Your last point has no business being in this list whatsoever. I know this and I don't even live in America.

what about PROTECT IP? isn't that the same as SOPA?
