Hello fellow Escapists. :p

There's a special occasion coming up in my house soon, and i was gonna back a cake that looks like a gaming console (haven't decided which yet).
I was just wondering how do you make that solid icing? I only know how to make buttercream and such, and there's nothing useful in my little cookbook.
I already know how to make coloured icing, i have lots of food colouring as well.
Any links would be useful. ^-^

My mum knows!

Damn, she's out shopping...

You can buy solid icing in shops, it's so yummy.
I'll update when mummy comes home.

All I know is...

You have to do the cooking by the book.
You know you can't be lazy.

Also, never use a messy recipe, or the cake will end up "crazy."

Yes, we're being really helpful.

This is off topic but cake is really nice.

Anyway, I think you have to buy a special sort from supermarkets or something.

I'm pretty sure that you can just buy it in some food shop.

Been a while since I baked a cake...
I would have thought that normal icing, spread smoothly, is just as good.
From what people have told me, solid icing is very difficult to apply, as a slight tear means that you have to start all over again.

Sorry I can't help.
Post a pic when you've made it.

I think you mean Rolled fondant?

If so then you should be able to pick some up at a bakery or you might even be able to pick up some from a cake shop

Edit - if your thinking about wanting to make some yourself it is very difficult and requires the right mixing tools and ingredients. Trust me when I say it is easier to just buy it then try and make it and also less frustrating and messy as well.

Second edit - but if you really want to try here is a recipe form the search I did.

Rolled Fondant

1 1/2 t plain gelatin
1/8 c water
4 c powdered sugar
1/4 c light corn syrup
1 1/2 t glycerine
Vegetable oil, for oiling hands and spatula

Sprinkle gelatin over water in small saucepan. Let sit for 5 minutes, then over low heat stirring frequently, stir to dissolve gelatin. Cover saucepan to keep warm. Place the sugar in a large bowl and make a well in the center. Add corn syrup and glycerine; do not mix in. Pour the warmed, dissolved gelatin into the well over the top and mix in with a lightly oiled rubber spatula or wooden spoon. Mix until the dough is too stiff to stir. Because the dough will be very sticky, oil hands with a small amount of oil. Knead dough until of the sugar is incorporated. Transfer to a lightly oiled surface and continue to knead until smooth and satiny. This will be the texture of clay. If the fondant is too dry, add in a few drops of water and if it is too dry, add in a bit of powdered sugar. Shape the fondant into a ball, flatten slightly and wrap well in plastic wrap. Let rest for 20 minutes before rolling and using.
