California Library Under Fire For Black Ops Tournament

The Sacramento Public Library is the target of recent criticism due to its upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops tournament.

Libraries have been scrambling to gain the attention of the world's new technology-focused population, and one effective method they've found is to embrace the videogame [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104729-November-13-is-National-Gaming-Day]. Videogames and videogame tournaments are not uncommon to see in public libraries these days, but not everybody is happy that kids are playing games in such close proximity to books.

According to the Sacramento Bee, The Sacramento Public Library is planning to host a Call of Duty: Black Ops [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Black-Ops-Xbox-360/dp/B003JVKHEQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1290462976&sr=8-1] tournament as part of its humorously named "Nerd Fest." Even though the library will only allow those 17 and older to play, the tournament is still attracting the ire of activists that likely have nothing better to do than rail on videogame violence... again.

"If they come in there for video game violence, are they ever going to go in there for books?" community television talk show host Jeanie Keltner asked. She, the Sacramento chapter of Veterans for Peace, and other activists are reportedly calling on the Sacramento Public Library to cancel this and any future Black Ops events.

Library director Rivkah Sass isn't backing down and says that the tournament will proceed on December 11 as planned. Her opinion is that it makes the community aware that the library has something for everyone, and is "simply providing a program and people are free to attend or not." Dr. Steven Schlozman of the Department of Child Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital echoes her positivity, and told the Bee: "This might be an opportunity for the library and the veterans group to talk a little bit about war, not in an angry way, but to tell the kids, 'You should know this is a game, and it's different than going to war.'"

It should be obvious that I'm totally biased and going to side the the library here. While libraries used to be the go to place for research or a little weekend reading, iPhones, Nintendo DSs, and the internet have reduced their overall reach. Libraries face figuring out new ways to get kids and adults inside, or extinction, and the Ghostbusters won't always be around [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100766-Ghostbusters-Save-NYC-Library-From-Budget-Crisis] to save them. Besides, once dozens of teenagers enter a library, I bet at least a few would end up wandering over to the history section to read a little bit about what Black Ops' conflicts were fought over, and that's really the ultimate goal isn't it?

Because the average teen goes near a library anyway. This is a /good/ thing activists. Better going there to play games and know its there when you need it rather than never going

Honestly, the whole "Violent Video Games" bandwagon has been blindly clutching at straws for the past two or three years. Resorting to underhanded tactics, childish name calling, and outright lying has exhausted all of their credibility in my eyes.

Ok, you guys don't really NEED to post a generic Black Ops campaign screenshot if it's completely unrelated to the particular story. It just makes it seem like you guys used a 'one-step news publisher' or something and just try to fill up the page.

Like what Daniel Floyd said in his proto-Extra Credits YouTube show, this could really help tangential learning; people play Black Ops, and then, because it's interesting, they learn more about the political maneuvering, historical figures, and events that shaped the Cold War. (Blimey that was a long sentence.)

Wait, they're complaining that kids are going into the library to see the games instead of for the books? Isn't this exactly how Walmart became a giant, by putting the big money saving draws in the aisles so that you'd walk through the store and inadvertently spend time perusing the entire place? This is marketing 101!

I think this is a good idea. Associate games with books, kids read more books (perhaps at first books like the Halo ones which aren't too bad.) Or they'll read books with similar topics as the game, there are plenty of books with guns and explosions.

Near where my uni accommodation is someone has scrawled in massive graffiti "READ MORE BOOKS". And rather good graffiti too, and I'm pleased to say there has been no attempt to remove it. I'm glad to see libraries, the cornerstone of cliché stuffy old people, embracing these sort of things more and more.

... Uhh.. It is related. The whole fiasco is based around a library hosting a black ops tournament. Whether its from the campaign or not is not really a problem. At least its from the game.

Wait, wait. What are the teenager kids going to the library for if the tournament is for 17 and older?

Can I watch?

I mean, everyone here knows what Black Ops is and even if they don't this image won't really tell them anything (besides that the graphics are meh, which is irrelevant). All I'm saying is that the image is in no way a visual aid, merely filler or protocol.

Website basics 101, they have to have a fairly consistent layout throughout the website. The picture is there to adhere to that, as that's how the staff layout the pages at the escapist. Without the picture it would not provide the same authenticity of news that we are used to.
Hell, they use the same pictures over and over in order to adhere to that.

Its funny that i am in a web development class as i type this too..
