CoD 1 and 4 are the only ones worth mentioning. 1-3 followed a formula and started getting stale and losing sales. They switched up the story AND multiplayer with 4 and it was awesome. They figured dialing it to 11 in MW2 would make it better. It didn't. But for some reason sales kept spiking. All the way up until Ghosts where it looks like it thankfully jumped the shark. The formula is stale, hopefully they understand that before the next one.
Honestly, we'd have had 4 instead of 2 if activision hadn't dug their heels in and insisted on a sequel. And by the same token, they did their best to force IW into making 4 just another world war II shooter instead of modern warfare (IE, they'd have killed their cash cow franchise before it was even born because they insist on following the crowd instead of trusting their developers to lead it).
Who knows, activision might had had titanfall (or whatever IW wanted to work on as opposed to mandated MW sequels) out instead of MW2 if they understood creativity.
