How many of these people weren't running antivirus? Maybe those people wouldn't need COD hacks if they didn't jam their connection with virus laden porn and free internet explorer toolbars.
I'm sure the instructions said to turn it off, and so they did. "Don't worry, it's a false positive..."

Color me shocked. Or since this is in the UK, perhaps I should say "Colour me shocked"
It seems to me the UK legal system already gave him plenty of opportunities to straighten up. I've had a couple of friends who were the victims of identity theft. It can make your life a living hell. Three years is pretty reasonable given the number of people he's probably victimized.

Smart enough to hack and steal in the internet, but dumb enough to get caught and do something stupid twice before going to jail.

Not that I'm one to ever judge other people's behaviour (...) but given that people were grabbing his file in an attempt to cheat at Call of Duty, my sympathy is somewhat limited. Which isn't to say this guy isn't a douche, just that he's targeting the right kind of people.

Yup he got what he deserved, we can only hope that 3 years is enough time for him to change his ways.
Three years you say?

Good maths you got there.

Regardless, this guy is scum. He deserves longer than 18 months. You can argue that he might change all you like, but he was already given that chance, and he fucked it up.

I thought it was for the guy who made "Call of Duty" stamped condoms.
Yeah, I imagine such a person would be taken to court in a lawsuit. "So I took the condom out of my wallet, and she takes one look at it, puts her top back on and leaves!"

You torget people doing wreng, and they can't call the ceps.... is the thoery. He should have stopped to make sure that they were also doing semething illegal, though.

(But, in fairness, it's similar to my plan to sell condem/etc. machines to gas stations that don't already have them in the restrooms... and then just not stock them. If someone is buying condems in the bathroem instead of the counter, they're likely to embarrassed or too rushed to cemplain that, "Hey, dude, your condem machine at my money!")

"If I let you finish your computer course, you'd only learn to be a better hacker."

Finally a judge who's making sense.

"Having a degree in computer-related sciences makes you a skilled hacker"

This is what technophobic judges actually believe.

Sometimes you have people in IT who are skilled hackers, but usually they were fairly skilled hackers before they left highschool.

There is nothing a computer course can teach you about security unless you have absolutely no experience beforehand.

Also, the hacker is the kind of person who will learn more and more about hacking even if you prevent him/her from touching a computer.

Now see, you assume I am not made of stupid.

That and I was quoting King of the Hill because there was a similar quote in one episode.

He's now been sentenced to 18 months in the slam for burglary and fraud, and even his lawyer seems to think that's where he should be. "It is clear that he is too clever for his own good and being that clever found it too easy to use that knowledge for nefarious purposes," attorney Thomas Restell said.
Huh? How clever could he be? He got caught. TWICE!

Wow, I totally thought this was going to be about COD-themed condoms.
There would be sales in the tens of millions, but only about three or four would actually be used.

High intelligence isn't an excuse to be an arsehole. He was obviously too much of a psychopath for his own good too. Too bad, but I think house arrest with a two-year internet ban and a hefty fine would be a more appropriate punishment.
