hi everyone, right, I've been into metal for years now, and Ive recently realised that I have very little black metal, but I would like to explore said genre.

can anyone suggest me any good black metal bands, and a good album to start with?

thanks in advance

Only black metal I like is Agalloch. This is because the majority of it is accostic, and the black vocals are actually quite soft. Very relaxing stuff.

Children of Bodom, without a doubt. Their two newest albums (Are You Dead Yet? and Blooddrunk) are very meat-and-potatoes metal while some of their older albums (Follow the Reaper, Hatecrew Deathroll) are more progressive.

All good stuff, definitely give them a listen.

Amon Amarth, Cannibal Corpse, and maybe even some Children of Bodom. Amon Amarth is classed as Viking Metal but it is pretty much black metal. Has the sound of Dethklok.

I'd suggest buying a Black Metal compilation CD. That'd be useful in these circumstances.
Wait a second, is black metal just metal played by black people?

Yea, I was gonna say Amon Amarth is Viking metal. I would've considered Children of Bodom more death metal though.

Nope, Black Metal is more of this:

Go on youtube and look for Dimmu Borgir, they have pretty SFW videos.
I would suggest Gorgoroth but the only video I've seen of them is rather graphic.

The majority of Black Metallers seem to be Norwegian.

not one? not ONE person is going to point out that 'mettlers' would more likely be a person with strong constitution or will power wouldn't it be metalers? or Metalheads?

Most Black Metal is pretty aweful... except the early ones methinks. Celtic Frost comes to mind. Or maybe 'Venom' the band that coined the term 'black metal'

I think we were just going to let that one slide.

Venom is considered the founders of the genre because their subject matter was very dark (some would say satanic). Their guitar work was not anything special actually. Jeffery "Mantis" Dunn's guitar solos were primarily based on the pentatonic and blues scales, which are used in more mellow genres, not metal.

Dunn even had trouble staying in time when playing live or recording in the studio. This stands in stark contrast to the highly proficient guitarists within the black metal genre today.

In summation, not knocking your recommendation, but the genre has evolved well beyond anything Venom ever did.

Oh. Well, I'm glad you cleared that up for me. Now I know I don't like most black metal. I should move to a different thread.

fair enough, but if I put black metalheads I think someone thought I was looking for Benjji web(thumbs up if you know who that is) or something

Minor thread res.

I don't understand why so many of the posters in here mentions bands like Children of Bodom, Kalmah, Dark Tranquility and Cannibal Corpse when he explicitly asks for black metal. I hope you realize that those bands are NOT black metal, not even close. Especially the first three mentioned.

Now, if it's good black metal you're after, I recommend checking out Naglfar. You could try the songs 12th rising [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T1zWLgMLFY] and The Mirrors of my Soul [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ4bwuWs4iw] to get you started, and then take it from there. Belphegor is another band worth a listen.
