Hey guys! Castlevania has been one of those series that has always interested me, but every title has slipped me by for some reason or another.

However, I'd like to change that. I've always enjoyed other "Metroidvania" titles, so I'd really like to see what all the fuss is about. However, looking back there are an awful lot of titles, and a number of different storylines within them all.

Basically, I'd really appreciate it if people would be able to recommend a title or two that I can "jump onto". Which title is a good starting point for someone who has never played a Castlevania before, really encapsulates the CV experience, and doesn't rely too much on previous backstory to get into?

Just to let folks know, I have a PS2, Gamecube, Wii, GBA, and DS Lite.

Symphony of the Night is still considered by many to be the definitive 2D Castlevania, and is compatible with PS2. It does have some story connections with Dracula X and Castlevania 3 (excellent NES game downloadable on the Wii), but not enough to mar your enjoyment. All 6 of the portable 'Castletroids' for DS and GBA are worth your time too.

Super Castlevania 4 for the SNES. I recommend getting it on the virtual console for Wii since it's near impossible to find a hard copy.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has no real storyline connection to the rest of the series.

if the PS2 is bacwards compatible I suggest Symphone Of The Night, for the DS I would recomend Potrait of Ruin and maybe the ,of sorrow miniseries (on both DS and GBA)

I'd recommend the DS games. They're really interesting and fun, and the DS makes it a little more laid-back experience.

The previous Castlevania games fell into a cesspool of confusion that stank to high heavens. That's why I fell off the series.

The recent reboot is a good effort at setting the slate clean, and although it is a departure from the previous games, it is the most fun I've had with a CV title in ages.

I'm confused by your statement.

On topic...go for the portable titles. They are pretty awesome Metroidvania games.

start from the beginning and work your way from there! there's no school like old school. the very first of course is castlevania on the NES. i would recommend skipping simon's quest (II) and the 3d titles.
