Syndicate wars was one of the first game I ever played. The first game I ever played was X com. My dad used to have them, and when I showed Interest he taught me to play. This would have been in 1997, before shiny new shooters like half life and unreal dragged me away from RTS (yeah nice one dad letting an 8 year old play them games). However, during that period of my life syndicate was second to only star wars as one of my favorite things in the world, I still have some of my old drawings of cyborgs. Also, I still have a model skyranger from X COM, which my dad got me when I was 7. Needless to say Im a massive fan of both games.

In a way Im a little upset that the recently announced syndicate wont be an RTS, neither will X COM, but am I the fan of the old games who is still excited that the franchise is getting a re-boot. I loved the world of syndicate and the lore of that world and am so glad I get to return to that world thanks to EA and starbreeze.

So, my question is surely it shouldn't matter if it is an FPS or an RTS as long as the game is good. I would rather have a new FPS syndicate, instead of no new syndicate at all.

That is not a question. That is a statement.

I never played Syndicate, sadly. But 2K Games can kindly go DIAF for this little nugget:

?The ?90s generation of gamers all love Xcom and we own the IP, so we thought OK, what do we do with it? Every studio we had wanted to do it and each one had its own spin on it. But the problem was that turn-based strategy games were no longer the hottest thing on planet Earth. But this is not just a commercial thing ? strategy games are just not contemporary.?

I was a massive fan of the Command & Conquer RTS games back in the day. I just couldn't get enough of them. I'd played games before C&C, but C&C is what really made me a gamer.

Anyway... some years go by, and I hear about this awesome new C&C title that was going to come out... Command & Conquer: Renegade. It was going to be a first person shooter. Gawd, I was excited. Finally, I'd get to see the world of C&C from ground level! I'd get to actually place myself into the combat boots of the Commando unit and wreck the Brotherhood of Nod's shit! The days couldn't pass fast enough for that release.

Then it came out. What a complete and total mess. The game was playable, sure. Nothing major in terms of bugs or anything. But it just completely failed to capture the tone and spirit of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn (the RTS title that it took place during). It was chock full of annoying character (player character included), one-liners so bad that even Jean Claude Van Damme wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole, and a completely throwaway plot that spit on the continuity of the series time and time again.

As a generic shooter, it wasn't particularly bad. But as a Command & Conquer game, it was a massive letdown.

I hope history doesn't repeat itself for you with Syndicate and X-COM... but C&C: Renegade has made me extremely pessimistic about RTS games turned into shooters.

Thank God StarCraft: Ghost never saw the light of day.

It sucks that every squad-based tactical game gets turned into something else, i understand it's not "the hottest thing on the planet" but there is a market for it.

Give me a real Syndicate reboot or Fallout Tactics2 (yeah i liked tactics, sue me) or x-com (the ALTAR afterX series was pretty good, just missing a liiitle something) or Jagged Alliance 3 (oh please god yes!, who owns that ip now anyways?)

Edit: oh, i forgot one, silent storm without retarded panzerkleins! :) that'd rock :)

I'd be happy with just 1 of theses...
