Calling "Games" something else...

If theres one thing I've learned in my short, but colourful life it's this: People are easy to trick.

People beleive almost anything you tell them as long as you LOOK like you know what your talking about, which is why anything with an "arty" or "foreign" sounding name automatically gets a free ride to some degree, regardless of what it is.

Games have come a LONG way, no doubt, but there is no escaping, escapists, that the very word "game" denotes trivial, fun little things that pass the time and are of no great importance.

I think that by simply changing what we call them, Games may avoid ALOT of the flak they cop.
By giving them a new, swanky title or description, that may be all is needed to trick people into finally realising that we arent still playing side-scrolling point hoarders or getting off on "sadistic murder simulators"

So, with all that in mind and for the sake of curiosity, if games were to be given a "better" title, what would you give them?

Video games.

If movies can be called artsy with the title "movies", why can't games get the same? Not going to pander and change the name just because some people happen to think they're too childish for the branding.

I still like Yahtzee's way of calling consoles "Electric Smiles Machines". I know that's technically not the games themselves, but it's too early to think at present

I know exactly what you mean: my ex girlfriend couldn't accept my ideas about games as interactive storytelling simply because of the word "game." Which was kind of idiotic, letting a word get in the way of what games that she herself had played obviously were. But you know. I'm not sure what we'd call it, though. But you're right: the word "game" is no longer applicable, and the term is holding the medium back culturally.

I call my games sweetheart.

Except for Superman64. It sits in the corner, where it's not allowed to be touched, talked to or even acknowledged really.

But on topic: Fuck those people. I'm not changing jack shit. Anyone who calls a motion picture or film a 'movie' (Think about it. It's a moving picture, so they called it a move-y) and then thinks the 'games' moniker in 'video games' is childish, is a total r-tard.

Besides, embracing 'games' is what diffuses a lot of the irate, ignorant parent crap, as it's 'just a game'.

How about interactive entertainment? I know that's a huge scope of things, but so is the word 'games' or even 'video games.'

Everyone pretty much only calls them vidcons these days anyway.
I've never heard a video game called a vidcon in my life.
