So long as they aren't spawn camping, there is nothing wrong with it at all. Campers are easy to deal with if you know the map you're playing on, and even easier if you just take a friend with you (even if he takes out one of you, he likely won't be able to take out both, since the element of surprise is gone). A good camper will constantly change his ambush positions every kill or two, which arguably doesn't quite make it camping, but the idea is the same - stay more or less in the same spot(s) for the whole game and take people by surprise. In the case where a camper is more or less impervious to attack, has a clear view of the enemy spawn, etc., then you have a broken map on your hands. That's one thing I hate about Call of Duty's multiplayer - there's no designated spawn zones, so you're very likely to get bombed to oblivion by an air strike as soon as you come back to life, only for it to happen again a second later.

I personally think that if people want to do a little camping fair enough to them and its a safe strategy, but if they do nothing but hide the whole match why even bother playing actiony (not a real word =]) shooters in the first place. That being said I am a fan of sniping from out of the way places in games and the gap from sniping/ambushing styles to camping is pretty thin

Yeah... I don't really camp with snipers. I sit there for a few seconds, pop a few heads while laughing hysterically/maniacally, then run off with my submachine gun/shotgun/laser thing.

Cod 4 renders camping obsolete. Just get 3stun/flash grenades and deep impact to nullify them. If you have played the game for any abouunt of time you should know the camping spots. So just toss a flash, or fire a few rounds though a wall. Idk how many kills I've got just by sniping though a wall where I know a camper is.

I don't mind camping (except spawn camping, obviously). It's more annoying in games without any kind of 'killcam' or such, because really, once you know where they are you should know better than to just walk back in. And even without killcams, if you know the level at all you should at least be able to guess.

I actually prefer defending over attacking in games where defending is actually important like Battlefield. It kinda annoys me when your entire team rushes up to the frontline, leaving all your rear bases unguarded and then (gasp) some enemies sneak past and take them. I always feel all smug and satisifed (because I'm evil, clearly) when I take out those sneaky people who think they can just waltz in. The point of defending is to defend. Otherwise it just turns into a stupid cat and mouse chase of the teams constantly switching bases (the bigger the map, the greater the problem).

yeah i'm going to have to say camping isn't a bad thing. it's a rather valid tactic, the only reason ppl get upset is cause they keep dying, tho i find it funny if they die many times to the same person cause they keep walking by the spot being camped

the funniest is when i hear ppl complain about snipers camping, simply because that's their job is to camp, that's how they kill ppl

and yes spawn camping is a problem of level design

Left 4 Dead stops camping witha nice system. The longer you stay in one place the more likely a swarm will appear. Even if you survive the first one, keep camping and you are fucked come the third.

Turtling...
This reminds me of an old friend of mine.. he would concentrate entirely on late tech in RTS's, and he had a reputation for mowing down 6-7 people with an ARMY of carriers etc.

Because of that Reputation, noone wanted to play against him, so they would all covertly make alliances with him.. He never once used allied victory, so basically what they were doing was giving him the time to build up his insane armies, and giving him all their base locations.

I was the only one to realize this, so I would try and rally everyone against him.. because I knew he was really weak in the beginning.. but nope, he'd just get everyone to attack me.. and then later he would kill everyone.

stupid kids.

Camping is fine as long as there isn't an objective/time limit. It's like a handicap for people who suck at moving, aiming, and being aware of their environment at the same time.

While there's nothing wrong with camping itself, Camping types are infuriating and cheap, primarily Spawn Camping. Funny thing: I was playing a 1v1 against a typical vulgar imbecile(like the idiots at 4chan.) and whenever I killed him after I respawned, he would call me a "Spawn Camper". He wound up winning, but only because he employed his own dirty tricks, like actual spawn camping and killing another player who was away from his console.

Also....

This basically defines camping.

Hey, continue to camp in the same spot, I'll continue to toss grenades into your retarded hidey-hole until you get the hint. You'll get one kill out of me I admit, but that's it.
I wouldn't put it like that, but I agree with the idea behind it. The thing about a camper is that once you know where they are, you can easily kill them. In a game like COD4 for instance, camping is suicide. The killcam basically takes care of this.

And if you're supposed to defend something, the whole purpose is to find a good spot so that you can shoot at unsuspecting people.

As for turtling, I'm mainly a turtler in RTS games. In a game like Age of Empires, for instance, I based whole strategies on basically building a nigh impregnable perimeter and building a wonder before my opponents even realize to start steamrolling me. Since in the end a lot of folks knew my playstyle, I had to build decoys and all sorts of other kinds of distractions to keep at it. Suboptimal, perhaps, but I just can't rush.
