Hey guys I was wondering if a PS3 can run PC games if you install windows on it?

EDIT: Sorry for my stupidity I just thought it might be possible with the option of installing another operative system it was just curious that's all.

Well i have theory cos i have seen people run old games like sonic and mario on the psp, so i guess if you do some illigal things that void your warranty i might be able too.

I know a guy who turned his xbox into a computer, so I suppose if you made some extreme hardware modifications yes, but at that point you might as well just buy a computer because you probably won't know what the fuck you're doing

If the PS3 isn't a Slim, you could put a Linux distro on it. I'm not sure whether there are many other practical obstacles to getting some Linux games going, though; I'm pretty sure PS3 Linux distros can't access most of the PS3's processing capability, so modern games probably won't happen (even considering how few modern boxed games actually work on Linux anyway). But you might be able to have some fun with some indie games if you can put them on via a USB drive :)

You can run Windows XP in an emulator in Linux (provided you have the original PS3 (not the slim). Though I'm not entirely sure of the limitations of this, you may not be able to install programs I am unsure. Even if you can run games the chances are it would be very slow as it would be in an emulator.
If I were you I wouldn't bother trying it unless you really know what you are doing especially withh the PSP. Because, if you do something wrong, you have just turned your console into a pretty expensive brick.

EDIT: Just to clarify you wouldn't need XP in an emulator, you could run the games straight in an emulator like WINE, but they'd still run as slow as hell.

Nope. Even if it did, I'm pretty sure the whole thing would melt if you tried playing Crysis.

Since PS3 can run Linux and Linux can run some Windows and DOS games then technically you can. Really though, I think that PS3 Linux doesn't have enough features and hardware support to run many windows games. You would do much better with a PC that is cheaper than a PS3 running Linux.

I would start with http://psubuntu.com/ to get the OS running as best you can, then experiment with different things like WINE and Windows emulators or Virtual Machines. I'm no expert on *nix, but I'd be stunned if there is nothing similar to Parallels that you could run under Ubuntu.

That said, this would be virtualization under virtualization, so don't set your expectations too high for PC game performance. I would say treat it as a fun experiment. I've heard of people turning their PS3s into pretty kickass little HTPCs via Ubuntu and XBMC (an experiment I hope to partake of when time allows), so I'm sure other things could be done as well, just manage your expectations and don't expect the same performance as you'd get from a mid to high end gaming PC. Who knows, you could come up with something completely unexpected.

I thought the PS3's architecture was different, that's why developers have such a had time programming for it.

So, just as everyone else has been saying, no you can't run PC games on it.

You could run PC games emulated in Linux, including with emulated PC hardware, but it would be extremely slow. Like, totally unplayably slow. You'd be able to maybe run some older 2D stuff, maybe absolutely barebones 3D if it had software acceleration available (think the original Doom or Quake). Other than that, no, it'd be pretty much impossible. The hardware between a PlayStation 3 and a PC is quite different, so games would never run natively (that's why you need an emulator), and emulating PC games on Linux without PC hardware available sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen. You'd get a better gaming experience out of a ten-year-old PC at this rate.

Even if the perfect emulator existed, you'd still run into the problem that PC games are memory hogs. You'd be emulating games you could run a $1 PC.
