Just wondering if fox news could be sued for lying about games? Anybody know law?

Fox news openly lies all the time and not just about games and i was wondering if they could be "spanked" for it?

In addition to the aforementioned lawyers, they'd probably twist the "freedom of speech" right into some sort of justification or something.

EDIT: At the risk of being misquoted again: Please read my post, I said "twist" for a reason. I am fully aware of what the Freedom of Speech protects, I was referring to the fact that a lot of people misuse it to say whatever they want.

Sure.
Have fun suing a multimillion dollar company that will tear you to shreds with super rich lawyers the minute you walk into a courtroom.

Freedom of speech wouldn't cover slander or libel or whatever its called in America would it?

Anyone can be sued. And anybody can win. Many cases, tough companies win out because they throw up a haze of bullshit even in the face of undeniable truth. Nevertheless, there is nothing preventing people from suing FOX but themselves.

I'm well aware of this, doesn't stop people from trying to twist anything they say into being covered by it. (whether or not it's actually covered is rarely an issue)

Doubt it. Fairly sure they have really rich lawyers even if you did.
I dunno, if you could prove they knowingly misrepresented the truth they could be sued for slander. Doing it would probably just result in greater support for fox news though. They could spin that shit into months of the "Evil Games industry fighting the truth".

To answer simply, no. In the same way Yahtzee cannot be sued for his reviews, News Corp cannot be sued for the 'opinions' of its Anchors and Personalities.

I'm sure you could try. But whoever did it would probably lose, big-time.

Even then, suing them for "lying about games" is probably not a legitimate case that any lawyer would take. Even if they're the kind that advertise on TV.

Honestly, it's not as if FOX news is committing a crime by being ignorant or whatever else they are in regards to video games.

Unfortunately no, they can't be sued. They may be spouting out ridiculous fear mongering crap but they always start that fear mongering from a single innocuous fact. What they do from there they call "speculation" and opinions.(I put speculation in quotes because that's what they hide behind to pass off lies) Even if you can get past that you run into the first amendment, which if it can be used to protect asshats like the WBC it will certainly be used to protect Fox News.

Rest assured that Fox News has it's ass well covered in the legal loophole department. Best advice is to just stop watching it and convince others to stop watching it as well. As is said frequently around here; vote with your wallet, and in this case, vote with your TV time.

Even if it were possible to win a case against them I highly doubt it would do much good. Suing them probably won't suddenly change their content or attitudes.
On the off chance it did though, it'd open a whole new can of worms, people would start suing television stations daily because something made them feel like they should be offended or something.
The popularity of suing is one of the most asinine trends of the past few years, someone will probably even sue me for this post because my sentence structure hurt their feelings and the only way they can cure that is with lots of money.

CNN wasn't sued when they were showing streams of Dan Rather's forged document pieces as truth when they knew full well that they were showing intentionally false information. If that's not sue worthy, I don't think anything Fox news has done is sue worthy.

Sadly, no. Especially not against Fox News. Not only is it way too big to fail, but because they literally had courts allow them to lie without repercussions.

See this: http://www.relfe.com/media_can_legally_lie.html

The only way they could be sued is if they blatantly lied on one of their actual news programs. One has to remember that most of the shows on any of the big broadcasters are opinion shows, not news shows. As opinion shows they are able to say pretty much anything they want (within the bounds of the First Amendment and all related material of course).

If they were to say "Video games will cause herpes, aids, and cancer all at the same time" and provide knowingly fake reports to back it up then there would be a case for libel and defamation of character. As it stands they can say "Video games are bad mmkay" all they want.
