Hello fellow Escapists. I have recently been having troubles with my back up desk top. I used the machine to run Ubuntu but it is no longer working.

When I boot up the system the lights and fans turn on but the Video output does nothing and none of the USB ports provide power. I can tell this because lights on my mouse and keyboard stay off even though plugged in. All of this happens as soon as it turns on and it does not boot into an operating system at al. I have even disconnected hard drives and removed boot disks to make sure those were not part of the issue.

Could a virus do this or just faulty hardware? It is pretty old but it ran fine until recently.

I was wondering if there would be any way to fix this or if the Motherboard is just trash now. I am not really in a situation where I need the system but it would be nice to have.

Not going to say a virus can't damage hardware, but such malware is exceedingly rare since these days the point is to make money off you somehow. The most likely cause of your problem is the power supply. Swap it with a known-good supply and you should be up and running.

Most likely issue is the power supply or a dead motherboard. Like said, try another power supply if you can. If that doesn't help, replace the motherboard or get another backup desktop.
