Right, so here's the situation. I'm Treasurer of a university film-making group, and this year we've decided to do something we haven't done before. We want to follow the lead of several other societies and set up our own website, to show members' films, announce events and socials, give details of meetings, etc. I decided to take on the task, and so I'm going to be working on setting one up fairly soon. However, although I have experience designing the look and feel of the webpages, I have no actual experience in making the website itself.

So, here's where I need help. How can I go about starting to set up a website, and what are the first steps in doing so? I need help to try and set it up and find a site to host it, and so on, so if anyone has any tips then please post them here!

If you have access to a relatively new Mac, there's iWeb, which is a free website builder that could do the bulk of the HTML for you, when it comes to layouts 'n what not. Your best bet would be to learn HTML (Which is a pain) or find someone who actually enjoys that stuff.
How detailed/ polished do you need your site to be?

Well, it doesn't need to be too polished, there's a girl (who I've not yet met) in one of our meeting groups who's interested in doing a website too, so I'll probably be working with her on this. I don't have a Mac, but I'm okay with learning HTML as I go (I did the same thing when I was trying to learn Python last year), if that would help? Though I guess HTML is much more complex a language than Python...

HTML is pretty simple, but I'm used to having Dreamweaver to help out.

Another thing that helps is using something like Illustrator to make your buttons and such. Make them as pictures in illustrator and import them into Dreamweaver, if you have access to either. If you don't, I highly recommend getting them.

Listen to this guy. I used to use Dreamweaver a little, and I thought it was quite good.

I don't have access to Dreamweaver, though I might be able to use something similar if the university computers have anything. I'll take a look on their network tomorrow and check... :p

Okay, I'm going into town tomorrow, by the way, so I'll be looking for books in Waterstones in building a basic website, so does anyone have any books they could recommend too?

Freewebs.

Why spend money on a website when you can have one for free?
its a great place to start out. Easy to use, easy to customize.

After a while if they want to carry it further, you could ask around and find someone to design a website for you. And the part that best is, when you do start a real website, you will already have a layout and design planned.
