got my self a samsung galaxy J1 phone. so far so good but now i try to set my own ringtone since i dont like any of the standard tones. but for reason it doesnt let me. i do as it says in the instruction, even checked online, but nope. still insist on the same tune.

i click on: setting/sound/ringtones. i select the tone i want but it just sets me back to the ringtone menu still displaying the original tone. same with notification. i dont want to obnoxious whistling sound when i get a message.
i have no idea why i cant set a ringtone to my liking. hope someone can help me there.

Weird...sounds like a bug or something. Are you pressing the back button rather than touching "OK" on the screen after you select the one you want? You should be able to change the phone ringtone from the music app by pressing the menu button then set as->phone ringtone. If the default tone selector is being a pain there are alternatives on the play store like this one [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eliyaapps.ringtonesetter].

thats what i also find weird. i clearly click on the song i want but it goes back to the ringtone menu. no win pops up to say OK, nothing.

tried the option by going to the music app. this finally worked. thanks. really weird why the other one (and obvious) is not working.
btw. the same way doesnt work for notification. i can set it as a ringtone, caller ringtone and alarm tone.
but no notification. the obvious way still doesnt want to work.

You might need to use an app to set it like I linked above though you probably won't have the choice of any of the stock notification tones...the default tone selector should actually work so there probably isn't a third party replacement. You'll probably have to find or make a custom notification tone and put it on your SD card or internal storage. You might also need to put a .nomedia file next to it so it doesn't show up in the music player app (or putting it in :/media/notifications should serve the same purpose).
