Basically, a lot of the things that you take for granted in modern games, FPSs in particular, were pioneered and/or popularized by the original Half Life.

However, granted, it hasn't aged particularly well.

I'm one of the rare few who haven't exactly been mesmerised by it, even at the time.

But I suppose the appeal of it was that it was essentially to the shooter genre, what Mario 64 was to platformers. It pioneered some gameplay mechanics we see in our shooters today, as well as implementing some mild puzzles and a chilling dystopian environment that sets the scene very well.

Another one of these?

Lots of people like the atmosphere, and it did kinda innovate a hell of a lot as a series. Like it or not, it's very important.

A `half-life' is the amount of time taken for the concentration of a reactant with a first-order rate equation to decrease to half its value.

Oh wait; you mean the game? it's a fun shooter released in 1998 that innovated in a number of ways that can easily be found through a google search (hint: the wikipedia page is as good a place as any to start).

I think the upcoming Black Mesa Mod will hopefully allow the original Half-Life to become more accessible to today's gamers (basically it's a graphical upgrade to the current source engine). Look out for that, It'll be freeware for anyone with a Source engine game on their steam account. Personally I thought the second was better, and I can't wait for Valve to finish ep 3.

If someone regards something as the best game ever, it does not necessarily mean they believe it is mechanically a better game than whatever recent release. I'm not sure why this is so complicated.

Anyway, since there have been a million threads on this, and such a thing as Google and Wikipedia exists, this isn't exactly necessary.

Before Half-Life, FPS games had minimal narrative, were level-after-level of combat (with very little connecting each stage), and were pretty much just frag-fests even in single-player. Basically, Half-Life revolutionized how narrative was delivered in the FPS genre and seriously raised the bar for quality standards and length.

Also, for the time, it was an incredibly immersive and atmospheric experience that you simply couldn't get elsewhere. Hell, it was turned down for funding for a long time because the scope it covered was deemed impossible. Without it, the FPS genre probably would have stagnated and died a long while back.

Like everyone else said, it was simply revolutionary for the time and a step forward for the Genre. The original graphics aren't great, but with the HD pack from Blue Shift that works in Half Life and Opposing Force as well makes it a bit better.

Half life was and is still a very unusual game. Unsual in a good way. Its setting, atmosphere and gameplay is very different than most games. Valve made an effort to make a game that is completely different then anything else on the market and that is what makes it something great. Piccaso whouldnt have been a great painter if he painted what everyone else was painting over and over again.

P.S: I hate valve time. When the hell will ep3 will be released?

I have played the original. I liked it, but it does strike me as being a game that was hindered by its graphical limitations, in terms of its narrative telling ability. I know it's going for less-is-more in terms of dialogue, but i think that improved textures and design capacity will benefit the overall aesthetic. As for Half-Life source, according to the Black mesa mod dev diary one of the main reasons they're making that was because of HL:Source's poor quality. I just deferred to their judgement on that one, they probably know more about it than I do.

As for the ep3 release, I'd much rather have them release a perfect conclusion to the Half-Life story than a rushed out game with loose ends. I'll wait as long as it takes, and I think Valve realises that making people wait for it isn't going to stop them from buying it.
