I've heard that this is one of the best animes out there but there are so many DVDs I don't know where to start, does it start as a TV series or movie? Which is the first one?

It's a film.

I don't know if it's different in your country, but here in the UK "Ghost in the Shell 2.0" is the first film. All it is, is the original film with cleaned up audio, dubbing and graphics.

There are some sequels, but I do not know about those.

But it is a fantastic film. If you like it by the way, check out Appleseed.

A lawbreaking police Canon Sue uses work to surround herself with coworkers that remind her of opposite attributes of her own personality, fight her customers and have sex with a mass murderer and conceive and raise too many children with said mass murderer.

...That what Tv tropes said.

The anime is pretty sweet (as anime goes) - the battles are punchy and logical, well thought through choreography-wise and well animated. The plot has some very nice cyber-punk themes, but sometimes get a bit exposition-heavy - though that is quite a common failing of animes.

I can't say which to watch first - the film(s?) or the anime - but I watch the anime first and enjoyed it. The film's universe isn't the exact same as the anime's, so there's no continuity or anything between them as far as I can remember, so don't worry. Just sit back and enjoy!

There are also Ghost In The Shell books and graphic novels. They're all over amazon and are quite good.

GitS is pretty much one of very few anime i can stand watching, and one of best cyberpunk setting ones. Didnt liked the TV series personally. The first movie was the best, but the sequel is not bad either, tho its more on the talking side and action is pretty bland.

In short its about cybernetic police officer. The whole idea of the anime however is the line between human and very human-like cyborg beings. The so called Ghost in the Shell is supposed to be something like a soul of machine, that lets them perceive things in more human way rather than just cold calculations. So it has that 'deep' underlaying meaning in there.
From anime simillar to GitS i think Ergo Proxy (at least till it gets really messed up) and Armitage try to say the same thing in different way.

My avatar, yeah, that thing in black and white with the creepy big eyes, is from a art expo called 'No ghost just a shell' which is based on the manga 'Ghost in the shell'. What a load of atists did was buy the rights to a minor charecter from the manga, Ann Lee, and create a 'persona' for her.
It's a great art expo and terribly interesting, but as far as the manga goes I know nada. I only stumbed upon the art expo on the off-chance in fact.

http://www.tate.org.uk/servlet/CollectionDisplays?venueid=2&roomid=5676 that's a link to the Tate modern blurb about the art expo.

Edit: I do realise this is a little off topic but quite interesting in relation to the topic.

There are three seperate Ghost in the Shell continuities.

The manga, which consists of two translated volumes, Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell: Man Machine Interface and maybe some extra little bits. (Shirow works slowly)

The TV series, which consists of two 26 episode seasons, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd Gig, and a TV movie, Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society.

The movies, which consist of two features, Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence.

That's roughly the decending order of quality as well, the manga is the best, the TV series is nearly as good, the movies descend into pretentious twaddle at the top of a hat.

Personally, I recommend "Ghost in the Shell", 1995 movie. Without doubt one of the best movies I've ever seen.

The movies are their own story, just as the Show is it's own as well.

Personally, the movie is just amazing. On the level of Akira really.

First was a movie, and a few more movies then GiTS: Stand Alone Complex came out, which is the anime. I'd watch the anime first, just to get a taste of how the series is and what to expect. I'd explain it to you, but I can't. No explanation can really do the show proper justice in any case for me, you just need to watch it. :)
Exactly.

Ot:I like the movies but you should probably watch a bit of the Anime first to see if you will like the style.

I think one man's pretentious twaddle is another man's masterpiece. The two Mamoru Oshii movies were the best of the bunch, in my opinion. They were tense, brooding, cerebral, fascinating. They were more concerned with the personal and societal implications of technological progress than they were with plot or characters. Its a never-directly-stated question: what makes us human?

The TV series was a much more straight forward and action-oriented 'spy games' sort of tale though I enjoyed that too (and by enjoy, I meant it was still some of the best TV I've ever seen). I've heard the manga was much the same, though I haven't read it.
