What does it mean when someone references the search button?

Does it mean that the OP revived a old thread or what?

Or is it some random ass meme from the bowels of /b/?

Okay, look at the very top of the page on this website. Close to the top right of the screen under an advertisement banner is the "search button". You use it to, well, search for crap.

As for what it "means" it usually has to do with someone repeating a thread that's been done before. Sometime the person that says it is being helpful, other times they're just an ass.

That about sum it up?

There's a little space in the top-right corner of the page, just above the BOOKMAR/TOPIC INDEX/REPLY buttons. I think you type in the words there, then hit the button marked "search"

EDIT: I was ninja'd...by a screencap.

When someone references the search button, what they're actually doing is reminding the OP to search for this type of thread to see if it is a repeat. As per the guidelines of the Escapist, it is more appropriate to revive an old thread that contains the subject content rather than create a new thread for it.

Therefore, it is a call to search for a thread before creating a new one.

Generally if the thread topic is older than a few weeks, a repeat may be tolerated if it is a fresh take on the subject. My only locked thread is one I created a half a year ago on WAR that was recently brought back to life by a Newbie.

If he in fact wanted to discuss the issues brought up in that thread (which he didn't, it was just a random fanboy cheery response to another completely unrelated topic on Quake of all things)

This is a case in which a new thread would have been more appropriate to searching out and posting into the existing thread.

Use common sense, yes?

If you do find a similar thread when you search, make sure you read through it. Don't just say something that has been said 100 times over, and make sure all the content is still relevant. Only after checking for both of these things should you Necro a thread.

Use it to search for posts. More importantly specific threads. We encourage the use of it so that we have very few repeat threads.

The actual search button is the one that says
'search forums" in red beside my profile/settings.

I think.

Actually, the staff want you to not create new threads no matter how old the previous thread on the same topic was.

Okay, so there's no "X months" etiquette. Good to clear that one up.

The Search Button is a priceless artifact thought to have been created by the great Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin. With it one is able to peer into mens souls and tear them apart at will. Many have lost their lives searching for it. Some go mad. Some simply die of starvation after spending months sat in their bedrooms searching for it. Legend has it that it was hidden inside a goat by Rasputin after he foresaw his own demise.

In 1978 the very first official expedition to the find arti-

Wait. That was something else. Sorry, can't help you buddy.

While you've done a nice job with the screenshot, you've made an error.
You see where the arrow passes over a red button saying 'search forums'? That's what you click.

No offense Necroswanson, I'm just trying to help.

That's spot on. I think a lot of people don't realise that that one searches the forums, not the rest of the site. Even the person who took the time to make a screen shot got it wrong :(

Perhaps this is why so many threads are duplicates but maybe it's just lazy people.
