Can Sonic be saved?

(Gah, sorry for the length...)

Personnaly, despite Sega destroying this childhood logo, I believe that there is enough material to give him one last gambit, the gaming market. Here are two plans of options Sega has to help their troubled franchise:

Version 1(Not likely, but simple): The shorter version is to make a call back to the 16-bit games with a "Sonic The Hedgehog 4." It would be completely 2-D, without any 3-D buggery and will be what Sonic always has been. Speed, speed, speed. May sound stupid, but look at MegaMan 9!

Version 2(Even Less Likely, harder, but sounds better than what Sega is doing, on paper...): Seeing that Sega hasn't had a good game since 1999 that was 3-D, they should get those designers back and fire everyone else. As for the story, pick it up from the, (not going to believe this) Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic. Sounds utterly stupid on paper, but I'm not going to lie when I say that the Sonic comic has very good writers. They're no Frank Miller, but they did a very good job. All of the characters have a personality, Robotnik isn't relied on to be the antagonist all the time, and they've added plenty of characters of their own, including a reborn United Nations Faction populated entirley with humans, A mercenary faction, A warring echidna faction, fighting a never ending religous war, and the list goes on, all set in a version of Earth destroyed by an alien attack 10,000 years before the story.

To turn this into a game I'd honestly go to the RPG route, turn-based, no random encounters. In game battle would be like V.A.T.S targeting system where you decide which point you want to attack and can attack as many times as you can. But then again this idea probably won't work, and the next Sonic game, will end up being bad. These ideas could feasably work, just a lot of effort would go into it, but isn't that what makes games great? Effort? They're probably not going to ask me to help design a game anytime soon, but after a decade they could at least remember to make something good again.

That's my two cents though. Fellow Escapists? What's yours?

One last note: I know any idea to save Sonic will probably never be done but, Sigh... just the nostalgia factor is too strong for me to say he's 100% finished. mabye in a year or two...

No, it can't be saved. I say "can't" as in "won't". It can be saved by someone who can actually take a step back and think, but all anyone ever seems to do is make lame and broken games with a blue blur moving too fast to control along a track that sets the course so strictly that it might as well be a Wii rail shooter.

Uhhh, your going to be disappointed. Sonic team are idiots, they choose game designs that the majority hate and then release them.
'The crowd asks for a traditional sonic game like the originals or at least the Adventure series'
Their reply 'Oh... must mean we shall spice it up by giving shadow a gun! no? ok then sonic goes through old boring books! no again? well how about we make him a werehog! (and completely screw that naming up) No? not that either? ok how about we give him a sword and he goes up against the black knight! No? ok then we got the best idea that will bring everyone back!!!

'We are going to make a kart racing game for a mascot that is supposed to be able to to run faster than cars!!'
The point i'm making is that sonic team are ignoring critical advice of critics and consumers and just dishing out stupid ideas cause someones going to buy it regardless of quality.

....and Seriously, that kart racing has gotta be a joke. Please tell me thats a joke.

I will probably get flamed for saying this, but Sonic games were never all that great, even the first ones, and he's obviously just a dried up cash-cow at this point. Forget about Sonic.

That's all relative. compared to the slow paced rubbish I played on the mega drive, they were solid gold.
They're still good for five minutes nostalgia on occasion, but that's it.

That's what I've been saying for a while. Sonic 3D just doesn't feel as good. I enjoyed Sonic Adventure, but all the rest cause tears. Sonic Heroes was flat out awful, I tried to convince myself otherwise but it was a poor game.

Just because you can have steak, doesn't mean you don't enjoy burger!

I'd go with the SatAM continuity, myself. And a turn-based battle system doesn't sit well with a character who is known for SPEED.

Here's how I might resurrect Sonic, in 3D:

1) RESTRIC MOVEMENT: Speed and curves do not go well together. Control of a speeding hedgehog making a turn feels slippery. I suggest restricting Sonic into lanes, and he switches lanes by a press of a button.

2) MAKE SPEED A BIGGER PART OF THE GAME: Why does Sonic run fast in his games? Initially, to show off 'blast processing'. Now, speed itself isn't very impressive anymore. My idea is to utilize speed-related puzzles along the track to open new areas, defeat certain enemies, and find hidden collectibles. Obstacles will be color-coded to show how fast your little blue hedgehog has to run to utilize an object. The color matches up to a color-based speedometer in the corner. You can gain speed by utilizing a speed boost (it can also be used as an attack, making Sonic hit top-speed for a fraction of a second) which is charged via the rings. For example, there's a red ramp going up the side of a building. You speed up to the red level on the speedometer, and you run up the ramp, up the building, and to a different part of the track. I think this would be kind of cool.

3) SATAM! NO MORE KING ARTHUR BULLSH*T!
Simple enough. Use the American SatAm storyline. It is the best thing Sonic has ever produced.

That's all I can think of for now.

No.... just no. However this will not stop the endlessly poor remakes being produces, the blue hedgehog was novel for a while but it's novelty has now worn more than thin.

SONIC IS DEAD!!! What they bring out these days is effectivly necrofeelia, f**king is cold rotting corpse for the last shreds of pleasure they can get. Why couldn't they just leave sonic with his dignity still intact after the 3rd installment?

Well the real interestig thing is WHAT can save Sonic? I am prety sure it can be saved.

Seems like a bunch of souless twits are controlling his destination though. I wonder whos bright idea it was to give a character with super speed a vehicle that moves slower than when he's on foot.

Sonic is a LEGEND! As has been said before, they need to scrap the gimmics and leave it at four moves - run, roll, jump and speed roll.

(i didn't read your entire post so ill just answer the title)

maybe if they wait for about 10 years and start a whole new really deep story and add a completely new selling point exept "oh look he is running realy fast" and of course they should keep the 2D level design and concentrate on the flow (like keeping the momentum from a checkpoint or quicksave)
