So a few days ago I was hospitalize a few days ago, and apparently when they did my piss test they found Cannabis in my system.

But I know I haven't smoked it, or ate it. Not to my knowledge anyways, and this is causing issues within my family. I know I haven't smoked weed since the last time with my dad, and that was many, many months ago.

My dad is on medical, and he can grow it. Sometimes I am around him when he smokes, and we sit and talk while he smokes.

But I tried googling some people say it can come from second hand smoke, and some people say it can't.

I really need help. I want to prove to my father that I am not lying.

If you're being honest then I'm gonna sat it's probably second-hand. Whether from your dad or someone else, I can't really understand any sense in it showing up in your test if you're not ingesting it somehow.

Drug tests always have a chance of being a false positive/negative. On a wide scale the errors can be pretty big.

Also, second hand smoke is the same thing (or worse) as first hand, so yes, it will put THC in your system. Smoke is terrible for the lungs; best to avoid it.

Why do you think it wouldn't show up in your system from second hand smoke?

Urine tests are good for about two weeks in regular users, for you as a solely second-hand person probably much less so that narrows it down quite a bit. But since neither of us knows what kind of test they used it's hard to tell the detectable quantity, maybe it was indeed fine enough that it detected some residue from second-hand exposure.

I know the Syva test by Siemens medical is pretty wide-spread amongst laboratories. That one has a false-positive error rate of around 4%, which should be ruled out by using another different detection method. But maybe the lab technicians were lazy or new or they just didn't care to double-check. Have you thought about doing another test to see what that one says?

On the other hand if it was a blood test, about 90% of 9-carboxy-THC (the active chemical) is gone from the plasma within 5 days, although that's all regular user's statistics, I'd probably subtract 2 days from that in your case.

I want to add that weed stays in your system for quite a long time (exactly how long, I'm not sure), so it's entirely conceivable that you got some second-hand smoke a few weeks ago, which left enough of it in your bloodstream to give you a positive result. Which is why it's probably not a good idea to be around people while they're smoking pot (among other reasons).

As someone who's done those tests before, I assure you the interpretation isn't always clear-cut. Sometimes the line that we're supposed to be looking for is very, very faint (as might be the case with second-hand smoking in the case of THC) and we often err on the side of "positive" rather than negative because we're very used to people trying to "detox" their system before a drug test.

They are also known for false positives (particularly in combination with the above tendency to err on the side of "positive"), so it stands to reason this could happen to you. Biochemically, there's no reason to assume second-hand smoking won't put THC in your system. It's the same smoke the primary user inhales, so it's ludicrous to imagine that inhaling it won't cause the exact same effects.

If you can, contest the results and get tested several more times to prove you're clean. The court might order periodic or random tests to confirm the false positive, so obviously avoid weed at all costs until you're clear.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I don't know what kind of test that they did, but I believe it was probably a piss test. I happened to be passed out when I was admitted to the ER. (The sleeping pills I was taking had a bad side effect, but I am okay now!)

I read some where the LAB tests can catch even 3-4 nanograms of THC. I have the websites bookmarked so I can have my dad read them. I just hope he takes the time to read them.

THank you again everyone.
