Records that is...

As some people say, records are there to be broken... but surely there must be some records that really can't be, for reasons of either human physiology, physical feasibility and so on and so forth?

I'm thinking of a certain record, set a little less than seventy years ago, which, for reasons of practicality, I do not believe will ever be broken, barring a technological collapse. (Will divulge on request.) Though some might say this one doesn't really count...

In a way I don't think records for height can really be broken. It's not like those people made any effort themselves, it's just the way they were born.

I think given the population size of the planet, one can always break a record.

Thing is, there comes a point where the record breaking levels off. The amount that broke the level will eventually become small. One or two points/inches/whatever that it becomes trivial to update the record books.

Divulge!!! TELL ME YOUR SECRETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(avoiding low content spanking)
You have mentioned a record that cannot be broken, so it's either controversial, sexual, or a record for the sake of argument.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole is likely to be the deepest artificial place on Earth throughout our lifetimes.

At its deepest point its 12,262 metres deep and that means it goes about 1/3 of the way through the Baltic continental crust, and was only stopped when temperatures down there rose unexpectedly high.

Is that the record for a word-of-mouth gathering?

Retrospectively that prank call did get a little out of control.

Could be talking about the atomic bombs. Number of lives ruined in one second. Also, writing that you're fluffing your post to avoid mod wrath is time better spent by deciding whether or not it was worth it to write in the first place.

Genghis Khan's baby record will probably stand forever. Guy got around for a long time.

Just for curiosity, I'd like to see someone research the longest turd ever shat.

And then train themselves to beat that record.

I would think if a record could/would not be broken...it would be something like that.

Nobody will ever break the world record for most times died... (Jesus uses hax)

There are some record like this but they are mostly things that people don't really care about. Like world's biggest shoe. Its just not something people tend to go after. There are also some records like continuous hops on a pogo stick that are so ridiculously high that people tend to look for something else to break. Also, world's longest case of the hiccups. It's hard to train yourself to beat it unless you can beat someone that has a condition that caused them to hiccup for years.

Number of aerial combat victories...

As I say, it is possible that it may be broken, but it is highly (read: next to impossible) unlikely... hence why I make mention of it for reasons of practicality barring a technological collapse. So yeah... 'for the sake of argument' -_- *shrug* And only because I posted something related about thirty seconds earlier...

Its not entirely unlikely that one day that record will be broken. I would sooner mention something like 'Number of mounted cavalry victories' or 'Worlds largest steam engine' (if thats even recorded, I bet something in that sense is).

I consider it still unlikely to the extent that it may as well be impossible. Your examples are perhaps not the best, better ones would be 'tonnage sunk' (Arnauld de la Periere - 453700 tons) or 'sniper kills' (do I really have to say?! =P ) because it is generally more noteworthy.

As I mentioned, for purely practical reasons, based on current military norms and mores, there are very few airforces who can give up 300+ aircraft to be shot down at all, much less by a single pilot. With technology playing ever greater roles in military actions, air-to-air combat is becoming increasingly marginalised (if it hasn't already), so skilled interceptor pilots are generally few and far between, and the dedicated interceptor fighter no longer exists. Such is the extent that few pilots would even contemplate going on more than a thousand combat sorties (and even if we go by Marseille's record and he sortied 388 times in a little more than two years, this is way way way beyond what pilots are expected to do). Granted, there is the technological and military doctrinal difference, but this rather stresses the point of how far removed from the WWII method of aerial combat we are now, and most likely will be a hundred years down the line. That and the cost of the aircraft involved, production time and national production capacity.

*shrug* As I say... practical reasons...

there is always going to be a limit on records if for no other reason than the fact we are governed by the laws of physics
a good example would be running/swimming whose records are broken basically every olympics. even with genetic engineering or cybernetics the hard cap is gonna be the speed of light but we can safely assume the limits of the human body will kick in well before that

Well, I think the "highest mountain on earth record" is pretty much set in stone.
As is "deepest place of the ocean".

As for records set by humans:
I do not think that a record is unbreakable if breaking it wouldn't go against the laws of physics.

Drones could quite easily beat the record for aerial combat victories if you count them as aircraft.

I'd say that doing 100m in less than 9 seconds is probably not possible to break for a baseline human, or is the very peak of possible performance. Same with other timed feats - if a record is measured by endurance or number of X performed, it's possible to break.
