I've had Steam for a while now and have always loved the thing. Cared for it, gave it walks everyday, read it bedtime stories. But now it wants to stab me in the back and refused to even get past the log in screen.

This is where the helpful escapist society come in:

As I sign into Steam, it finishes logging me in and then it blurts out:

Could not connect to Steam network.
This could be due to a problem with your Internet connection, or with the Steam network. Please visit the Steam website for more info.

Yet I think this; I am already on the internet, I have a fine connection and I have buddies on MSN messenger to ask if they have this problem as well, they reply with "No, my steam works fine."

I work my way to the website to discover that it was a waste of time to read through the troubleshoot, I scan my computer and find nothing that has gotten into my computer to interfer with Steam.

Are there any suggestions on how to fix this? Any help would be much appreciated

Reinstall the client would be a good port of call. You can probably backup your game files so you don't have to re-download the lot. Can't say that that will work for sure.

You've not changed any internet stuff since it last worked? Changed firewall or anything? A blocked port or two, or a permission not given could cause problems.

Actually, just restarting the pc or waiting a day could see if the problem resolves itself.

Go into your steam folder and delete ClientRegistry.blob and AppUpdateStatus.blob

It solves most problems.

Tried these both. And the only option I can click on the error is "OK", by the way.

I've also tried unplugging my internet connection to play offline and the same thing still happeneds.

I don't know, but the whole thing seems a bit glitchy since the last client update. So, it could be on their end. I know I can play Steam games just fine at the moment, but some game servers can't make the connection to the actual Steam servers, in TF2 for example you may get an invalid ID error or somesuch.

Care to elaborate? Or how about how to fix it?
Well, I don't have Steam so I can't help you there. Sorry.
PEBKAC means it's a user error; Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair...
Okay, thanks for the definition.

Clear the cache? That sometimes works when I can't sign into Xbox.com
How..?
I'm assuming your running Windows? I'm on a Mac and haven't used my Windows in a while. But I believe you go to settings, then to history, then you should see "empty cache" or something like that.
If it isn't in the history section its probably in the settings window.

I've had mine since '05 and never encountered problems of that kind. I suggest seeking help via official forums.

...I'd die if I couldn't access GMOD10.

While I don't have any specific answers, I would suggest that the steam forums might be a good place to start.

I've checked through there, seems many people have the same problem I do.

Thing is, Steam is blaming us for not being able to sign in, when it's them. Because this is happeneing to alot of people everywhere.
