A completed film involves even more time and effort than coming up with the idea that fueled it. Infringment and piracy are both forms of enjoying the fruits of anothers labor without due compensation.
isn't it enough that people are seeing and loving a person's work? there are things that, to me are worth every penny i pay for. but if a creator (not pointing fingers*, METALLICA!!!) is so greedy that the fact that there are people all over the world enjoying their work (which, surely should be the reason to create) along with the bulging sacks of money they've already received for the work isn't enough, i don't see them deserving a penny from me.
*yes, i'm fully aware that that is pointing fingers jk
Well let me setup by saying, as a big fan of Metallica music, I see two things going on in that situation. The most obvious one to everyone is how Metallica has been sucessful as hell and is likely not even thinking about the poor house from nearly any amount of piracy. I also think when your bread and butter is work that is enjoyed by the public it's not very smart to go on a crusade against people pirating your work. The bad PR just creates more pirates. However none of that is really justified. You're whole point implies that people who create things, owe them to you, and are wrong for wanting some form of exchange of currency for thier work.
The fact that somone is more wealthy than you does not justify you're acting in disregard to thier rights over thier intellectual property. Do I think jailtime is in order? No I don't even think that's productive. The fervor at which Metallica/Elektra records pursued thier anti piracy ranged from ill-advised to flat out extreme.
As far as people enjoying thier work, being the reason to create, there in lies the number one fallacy of the pirate. The creators of a song, game, movie, or even concepts for such, put thier time, effort and resources into the creation of those things. It is not anyone but thier perogative, to say what it should be for. The more polished the production is, the more people, time, money and skills(which also take time and money to develop) it takes to create.
Music is probably the wierdest example though as many record companies screw the hell out of thier artists, who in turn make miniscule percentages off of record sales, and have to pay out of thier own earnings for concert and music videos. It's really a whole can of worms on top of what was mentioned but it doesn't change the fact that you have no say, over somone elses work.
The fact that this fealing of entitlement is so widespread is staggering.
Hell every job I've ever worked is the same way though. Supervision get's this idea they should lord over your life, demanding extra hours and a schedual that can change at thier arbitration, with little or no warning, but demanding from you weeks of advance notice for a day off. You should be doing it for the love of the job in thier eyes. Theres no limit to what they should be able to demand of you. This is the same philosophy people take to pirating art they like. Oh it's really good I want to play it, they should just be stoked I'm playing it(the hubris is pretty thick here) not all pissy that I didn't pay them for thier work. You wanna fight the greed of production companies, and it getting between you and the artists/art you love? Do what Offspring did, start your own and be fair to people. But pirating it does nothing to change that, that's just you getting free stuff. That's all it ever was, that's all it will ever be.
