Capcom Ditches GAME As Possible Closure Looms

Troubled U.K. retailer Game announced that it will not be stocking Street Fighter X Tekken or Asura's Wrath as executives consider "pulling the plug" rather than struggling through more financial losses.

"It's always darkest before it goes totally black," as the old saying goes, and it's getting very dark indeed for U.K. videogame retailer absent [http://www.game.co.uk/] from Game shelves in March.

"Unfortunately Capcom must confirm that Street Fighter X Tekken for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and Asura's Wrath, both scheduled for release on Friday March 9, will not be stocked by Game or Gamestation either in their retail outlets or on their online stores operating in the UK and Ireland," a Capcom rep told MCV [http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/game-not-stocking-street-fighter-x-tekken-and-asura-s-wrath/092246]. The game will still be available through other retailers in the U.K. and Ireland, the rep added, and Game is offering full refunds on preorder deposits.

This latest blow could spell the end for the Game Group, as The Express [http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/305980/Bosses-may-pull-the-plug-on-Game] says executives are already considering shutting down the company completely rather than trying to struggle through future losses. "There is a real risk that Game's directors will pull the plug because they can't be sure that the company can survive through the next trading season, and then insolvency becomes inevitable," a "source close to the situation" said. "They are in discussions with their legal advisers about whether to shut up shop rather than rack up more losses."

The Royal Bank of Scotland, which heads a consortium of Game Group lenders, is reportedly growing antsy with the situation but can't push too hard for more closures for fear of making things worse. "Suppliers pulling their products is a stepping stone to administration, but the problem for RBS pulling the plug is that it will be an expensive and complex administration because Game has 1,274 stores across Europe and Australia," another source said. "Lending banks will only want to consider a pre-pack administration, where there is a pre-arranged buyer, but who would want to buy Game?"

One possible suitor for Game is U.S. retailer GameStop, although any potential deal would have to work around GameStop's lack of interest in Game's Australian [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116082-Australia-Hampers-Potential-GAME-Takeover] operation. Game hasn't commented on the loss of Street Fighter X Tekken and Asura's Wrath, but says its current supply problem is a "temporary situation."

I heard this the other day but it was about Mass Effect and EA. This is bad news for us here in the UK and most likely the colonies as from what I hear HMV won't be around for much longer either. So its basically Toy'R'us or one of the big chain super markets for new games. Gawd I hope Computer EXchange is holding out... if they go that will basically be it for my gaming experience...

This doesn't come as a surprise. Game has been circling the drain for quite a while already. When they're unable to stock new titles it really means the beginning of the end. I feel sorry for those who use Game for their gaming needs.

CEX is an entirely second hand shop.

I can see them actually booming from GAME and Gamestations growth as you can't exactly trade games in online can you?

Still, it could be tricky.

No... GAME, please don't close, I get 90% of my video games from you... especially now HMV doesn't stock PC games anymore. T.T

As long as Gamestation stays open, I'll still be OK...but God forbid them closing down too, then all I'll be left with is the extortionate prices of His Master's Voice.

Nooo! I love Gamestation! GAME can go, but not Gamestation as well!

I was always under the impression that EB Games was part of GAME and Gamestation, since EB was the shop that existed before GAME in my town. Doesn't EB still exist in America? I'm confused!

Oh well, off to CEX I go...

I see what you did there...

LOVE that painting.

But yes, they are incredibly exspensive. I have no idea how HMV hasn't gone out of business already. Why do people still shop there?! Especially when you can find most of their products for half the price on Amazon.

The thing is Tesco's, ASDA, etc are now stocking pre-owned games and this could effect CEX badly if they offer better deals which I could really see happening. Still, the fact that CEX stocks EVERYTHING where as the chains would most likely only trade and stock big new games means that CEX is proberly safe... I really, REALLY hope this is the case.

EB Games is owned by GameStop in the US, Gamestation is part of the Game Group in the UK. In other words, as Game goes, so goes Gamestation.

Don't know weather this is good news or bad news then but from what ive heard from the interwebs, family members, lunatics on the street, etc, HMV may be closing as theyve took such a hit from digital downloading.

Why don't you just buy games online?

I've been doing that for years, and they're cheaper then at brick and mortar stores.

Buying games online is usually my first choice, but trading in pre-owned games for new ones is what I use stores like Game etc for. Also buying gave me the advantage of buying 18 rated games when I was underage. Haha.

Ah, well there you go.

I don't trade in games, so it's not really an issue for me.

Every day they lose more and more new titles... Theyre closing for sure now... The city centre here only has 2 GAMEs and a Gamestation... so unless somebody trades it in at CEX, ill have to buy from Tesco, and that limits me to the overpriced top 10 whatever, and whatever crappy Wii games they can be bothered to stock :/ Also, ill have no reason to ever visit the center... no more Greggs, museum, clothes shopping unless i make an effort to do so. not good.

i guess the lure of piracy shines a little brighter too :|

When i wanted to buy the metal Gear HD collection and had to go to an indie shop because neither of the big boys on the high street (Game and Gamestation) had it alarms bells started ringing.
