Captain Jack Wants to Be Part of TARDIS Birthday Bash

John Barrowman is ready to return to Doctor Who, but he needs your help to do it.

John Barrowman, perhaps better known to sci-fi fans as Captain Jack Harkness, says that he would love to be a part of the 50th birthday celebrations for Doctor Who in 2013, and wants any fans who would also like to see him back in the TARDIS to let the BBC know.

Captain Jack Harkness first appeared in Doctor Who in 2005, as a companion for Chris Eccleston's ninth Doctor. Harkness died in a conflict with the Daleks in the 201st century, but was brought back to life by a time-vortex-infused Rose Tyler, rendering him effectively immortal in the process. Abandoned by the Doctor, he joined - and later led - Torchwood, safeguarding the Earth against the alien threats that the man in the TARDIS wasn't around to deal with.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz [http://bangshowbiz.com/index.html], Barrowman described Harkness as an "integral" part of the Doctor Who story, and said that it would be a shame if he wasn't involved in the anniversary. He said that it wasn't a case of whether or not he wanted to come back to the show - he said he'd do that at any time - it was whether or not the BBC wanted him to come back. "I've said to all the fans, you need to write to [the BBC] if you want it to happen because I've never been asked," he said. I know Russell [T Davies] thinks it might be a nice idea, as did [Doctor Who showrunner] Steven Moffat but who knows?"

Considering that there are literally years - albeit only just - before the anniversary, Barrowman is really starting his campaign early. It could be that the BBC does want Jack to come back for the anniversary, but plans to ask him nearer to the time.

Yeah, still haven't actually watched the new season of Torchwood. I'll watch it eventually, but still watching Doctor Who religiously.

EDIT: Also, bring back Christopher Eccleston. I don't care how, just do it.

Yes. I support this. I do like me some Cap'n Jack, although in the new series of Torchwood he's lost some of his charm.

Yeah, still haven't actually watched the new season of Torchwood. I'll watch it eventually, but still watching Doctor Who religiously.

The new Torchwood is a lot better than the new series of Who.

It's actually got an interesting plot and because it's shown a little later on in the water shedding, it's not afraid to kill(sort of) off a few main characters when you're not expecting it.

Well, alright, I'll take a look at it. I think Space channel has it up online, so I'll watch it there.

I don't really agree with him being "integral", but Jack Harkness is always a joy to watch so I wouldn't mind.

I never got into Torchwood. Maybe the series gets better after a while... I've heard good things about Children of Earth, but the first season was just so bad it was painful to sit through.

I hopefully all the things that have been making this latest series horrible, will be dealt with by then, or it will be one sham of an anniversary.

The last three episodes were some of the worst. Amy and Rory are really bringing the show down, they are like the John and Yoko of Doctor Who.

Not really next year, it does say in 2013. Doctor Who started in 1963. If they do it right, the anniversary special will are on or just after November 23rd, 2013.

RTD may have had his bad points, but nothing as bad as what Moffat has been doing to Doctor Who as of the past year and a bit.

OT: I don't see why not. If they did it right then it would help alleviate its problem of having a lead character who has a perpetual character arc that can't really go anywhere.

I was very disappointed in Miracle Day. It had a pretty good cast (least I thought it was going to be good) but it just did not work at all. Meanwhile I hate the new season of Doctor Who and the new doctor and supporting cast all together. I have stopped watching it in fact and doubt I will go back till we get a new doctor (hopefully before the anniversary).

I've stopped watching before due to not liking a new doctor a few times in the past, but usually would at least keep up with what was going on and give the doctor a few more chances over time to get better.

I won't be doing that this time.

I thought bought Christopher Eccleston (one of my favorite doctors) and David Tennant where excellent doctors.

Matt Smith is my least favorite doctor of all time beating out Peter Davison as my previous least favorite. Perhaps I just don't like young doctors but I really don't think thats it at all. Both actors have in my opinion a similar portrayal of the doctor that just doesn't work for me.

As far as having Barrowman come back......well he is an interesting character in the Dcotor Who universe and it could at least add something to a horrid current incarnation of the Dcotor. Honestly though, I hope he doesn't come back till after we switch out this current doctor with a new incarnation. I also hope they make a REAL season of Torchwood and get that show back on track. Children of Earth was ok (still prefered the original 2 seasons format better), but Miracle Day blew chunks...and I even ordered Stars just to watch it right away.

I think Barrowman is over-stating his importance to the series, but his character did make an interesting companion. I liked The Doctor bickering with another time-traveler who was less ethical, less effective but still a good guy and a stalwart friend when the chips were down. I don't know if he'd really fit in to the 50th anniversary very well, but a nod or token appearance would be nice.

Anyway, I loved the character and it sort of makes me sad that he hasn't been back since Tennant left. I kind of got used to seeing my favorite Captain appear once a season at the end. I mean, sure, there's Torchwood, and I love it, but I loved seeing Jack interact with the Doctor. That was always a lot of fun.
