I cannot explain it but I have a sudden urge to play a game where I am the captain of a vessel. I am not picky about the setting the ship can be anything from Ancient Greek Trireme to the Millennium Falcon (though I would prefer something with a historical basis).

Oh, and I am not willing to pay monthly subscription.

Well you can try Easy India Company for a more absolute sim, or Empire Total War does ship handling quite nicely. If you want something on the comical side Sid Meier's Pirates! is always a classic. If you want to change it up a bit the Silent Hunter series is also alot of fun. There's also the brand new game Carrier Command which isn't too bad if a bit repetitive.

Do submarines count?

The Silent Hunter series is generally pretty fun. It's a bit too "simulation" for my tastes, in that it's terrifyingly unintuitive and a bit too realistic (let's just say life on a U-boat could be pretty boring a lot of the time) but I've enjoyed it.

Silent Hunter 3 is still generally regarded as the high point of the series, but if you want better graphics or don't like the idea of playing as the Germans in the Atlantic setting, Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific is also pretty decent once you patch it up.

For spaceships, maybe try FTL (probably not what you were looking for, but try it anyway.. it's bloody brilliant). It's a slightly different take than you might expect, but it's definately "captaining" a ship rather than piloting one.

If your willing to step into a sci fi type theme, give FTL a try. Pretty great game and always fun to name your crew after your friends and weep manly, manly tears when they die trying to put out a fire in the oxygen bay.

Edit: Ninja'd by the guy above, but I second his recommendation.

Freelancer,
it's seriously an amazing game and there are a ton of mods. It's pretty stellar for an older game, and it's one of my favorite time wasters

I remember back in the old days t'was Sea Dogs that scratched that itch. I think there was a pirates of the carribian based sequel which might also be worth checking out.

What about The Ship?

Yeah... that's not a ship game at all, I know...

Could you elaborate a little more what you're looking for? If you want a ship simulator, a game where you command a fleet or a game with various elements including ships.

It takes a long time to get in to the game though so you must have the time to play it.

At one point War Thunder / previously known as World of Planes, will include ships. WW2 era.

But not yet.

The X series is about as exciting as a mondaymorning traffic jam.

I La-La-La-LOVE the X Series! But that being said, Violator[XL] is correct the game plays slower than the half-life of cobolt-60. If you have a couple of friends lying around or stuffed in the freezer check out Artemis Space Flight Simulator.

Might I suggest Star Trek Bridge Commander or Eve Online?
Basically what he said. Star Trek Bridge Commander is a REAL captain game (and also one of the better games in the Star Trek universe). You can see and interact with your crew, give them orders, and most importantly of all the gameplay is both good and addictive!

It also has extensive mod support. It's one of those great modding games similar to Baldur's Gate, Skyrim and Fallout etc.

you need to play Guns of Icarus Online, basically you the captain and 3 other players online together man a flying airship. the other 3 players can choose to be an Engineer, to repair the ship, or a gunner, to damage the enemy ships. it's one of my favorite games on steam right now. http://gunsoficarusonline.com/ its 25% off right now if you pre-order

Battlestations: Midway sounds like a game you might enjoy. A WWII game where you start out as the captain of a single torpedo boat and move up to commanding entire fleets.

Carrier Commander. The campaign is terrible, but the skirmish mode is seriously fun. It is a kind of RTS where you can control your units like a FPS, all from the safety of your aircraft carrier.
