Captain Olimar Will Return In The New Super Smash Bros.

The latest update to the official Smash Bros. website reveals that Olimar and his Pikmin will return in the new game.

It looks Like Captain Olimar and his trusty Pikmin sidekicks/cannon fodder will be joining Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Pikachu, Bowser and Pit as a returning character from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. An announcement on the official Smash Bros. website [http://www.smashbros.com/us/characters/pikmin.html] showcases a variety of Wii U screenshots of the Captain doing his thing.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Olimar used red, blue, yellow, purple and white Pikmin in the majority of his attacks, with each one having a different ability. In the upcoming Pikmin 3, two new types of Pikmin make an appearance: the rock Pikmin and the flying Pikmin. None of the new screenshots show these new Pikmin, so it's not known if Olimar's arsenal will be extended in the new game.

Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai previously stated that he was really "stressed out" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125115-Smash-Bros-Director-Is-Stressed-Out-Deciding-The-Roster] deciding the new Smash roster, and that he was looking to cut down on some of the less unique characters from Brawl. Olimar, who was only introduced to the series in Brawl, is pretty much the definition of unique, so i'm glad he made the cut.

The last revealed character for the new game, the Wii Fit Trainer, raised a couple of eyebrows. Sakurai later justified her addition by explaining that she was "not a choice we made for the sake of cheap novelty."

What do you guys think? Does Olimar deserve his place? Are there other Brawl fighters that are more deserving? Considering the new Pikmin game is just about to come out, it does seem like a sneaky little bit of cross-promotion from Nintendo.

It still saddens me that they're giving a new, interesting, potentially unique character the shaft in favor of shallow ones noone cares about.
Olimar is a good one who's unique enough to be there, but come on, do we need Wolf or Falco?

OT: Don't really care, never liked him and I hated his final smash but please add someone else from metroid apart from samus.

Mewtwo was essentially remade into lucario. I could personally live with Lucario, Jigglypuff, and Pokemon Trainer getting the Axe. I already have a game where I can battle pokemon. It's called pokemon.

yea I think it might be just your specific circumstance as I have found everyone one else saying that mewtwo was pretty useless(he is in the second lowest tier), they still want him back though. lucario was a vastly better version of mewtwo but everyone rather wants mewtwo, including me.

Its says right there in the article their looking to cut the non-unique charecters. Which i'm assuming is code for Falco, Wolf, Dr. Mario, Toon link, and possibly Gannon.


Gannons kind of a tossup there tho. While he is an exact copy of captain falcon mechanically, the vast reduction of speed to all the attacks makes him feel different to play in a way that the other 4 never did. I'd honestly be really suprised to see him cut altogether; given how big a character he is it seems more likely that they'd just rework a few of his skills.

Well I guess I'm alone in being pretty happy about this, Olimar is a a great fighter if you use him and the Pikmin well. Glad to hear he will be returning.

The only character I want in that I'm actually worried might get the axe is Sonic. With Sonic and Megaman as the two third party character's, I feel like the game would cover basically all of the big classic franchises.

If Jigglypuff stays as nerfed as she did in Brawl I wouldn't mind her being dropped, but a USEFUL Jigglypuff would be my favorite character (anyone play as jiggly in Brawl? She dies at around 50% damage).

I figured with Pikmin 3 on the way, Olimar wouldn't get cut. I do hope his moveset will get updated with the new Pikmin. I imagine you could get all kinds of crazy strategies with them.

I don't know. I had heard a while back in Japan at a Smash tourney, someone broke Olimar. It is just how you use him, I suppose...

Nah, he's one of the more popular characters in tournament play... Apparently he's really, really good (bordering on overpowered, albeit not on Meta Knight's level) if you know how to use him. Personally I was never able to figure out his playstyle, but his popularity certainly didn't come from nowhere.
