Have you ever seen a movie and though to youself: "I can't believe this was mere acting" or "Why are tears streaming down my face?"?
Captain Phillips is exactly that kind of movie.
In Captain Phillips (played by Tom Hanks) you follow a dedicated captain and his crew as they are shipping cargo through pirate waters. The story is based on an actual event from 2009 where a ship was taken over by pirates as they were on their way to deliver the cargo.
The story is compelling and thrilling, leaving you sitting on the edge of your seat to the very end. Followed by amazing acting and great directing making you feel as though you were there when it happened.
The movie follows the epic way of storytelling which means that the peaks of exitement go up and down througout the movie, as opposed to the hollywood model where it builds up to a climactic ending with a short cooldown and resolve.
As the cargo ship is eventually boarded by pirates Captain Phillips tries to outsmart the pirates by stealthily telling his crew (who is in hidind) where the pirates are searching through radio transmissions.
Eventually they manage to take the pirates' leader hostage and use him as leverage to let themselves go free. This however goes terribly wrong as the pirates manages to take the captain with them in an escape captule. Here the captain is forced to think out a plan to get away before they reach somalia, where he will be held for ransom. A task force tries to come to his rescue where things get even more heated.
In short: great acting, marvelous camerawork and storytelling makes for a memorable movie. The movie is only somewhat ruined by the fact that someone needed to be alive to tell it, but in it's defence the movie drags you so into the story that you forget all about it.
