Captchas on the Escapist

Seriously, these are probably the worst captchas I've ever seen. Ever. In no way am I able to read more than half of these. Does anybody know why its so terrible? I can get it at any other site, but these ones are always so weird.

Oh, and would it be ok if they were actually words so I could at least try to guess what I'm supposed to be typing? Seriously, my captcha right now is "Undlect fhall" or something.

If you can't read them, you don't have to match them. Including symbols you cannot type means you can put any word there, and it will work.

I'm loving some of these Captchas. Seriously, Lord Inglip has some pretty wacky orders. For instance, a couple of hours ago I was told to affront elfrow. Poor Elfrow never saw me coming.

The effort it would take me to throw up an image pointing out the refresh button on the captcha, so I'll just say... there's a refresh button on the captcha.

Yes it's annoying. No, they aren't going away anytime soon (unless they are, I don't run the show). Deal with it, subscribe to the Pub club, or stop posting. If you have a very serious problem with, then send a message to the actual staff. We don't have to have someone post about it every time they get fed up.

Anyway, when it's something illegible you can just put anything in that field and it won't care. Out of some weird habit I put CHIESATONAKA into reCaptcha whenever I run into it.

I can assure you that these are not bad Capthas

The ones on 4Chan have characters that don't exist on a standard keyboard and they're some of the best.

It's Google's reCaptcha, which uses words scanned from books. The idea is that they pair an unidentified word (or series of letters, apparently) with an identified one to hopefully verify what the unidentified word actually is, using algorithms that compare solutions. The ultimate goal is digitizing the books the words are scanned from. The reason some look like math equations or other un-typable nonsense is that they probably don't screen the unidentified text and a lot gets through that we can't deal with.

I've seen worse. I went without using my Gmail for a while, but completely forgot the password to my account. After I inputted the wrong thing a few times, it started giving me captchas. And good god, I must have refresshed that thing twenty times before I got something even remotely readable. I can typically make out the ones here just fine.
