I never really watched anything she starred in, but I loved The Fast Show. And y'know what? Whilst I have the boxset I hadn't actually remembered she was in it, and it was only watching an obit last night that the penny dropped. That's either me having a weird memory, or testimony to Aherne's chameleon-like nature. Off the top of my head the "What did I say, Roy?" sketches were my favourite examples of her in that show.
She really did have it unlucky, to say the least, with cancer.
But yeah, even though I rarely gravitated towards her work, there was no denying her talent, quick wit or acting ability. She rather fits into that seemingly quintessentially British vein of situation comedy shot through with at times bleak pathos (e.g. Porridge, Phoenix Nights, maybe even Spaced as well?). Intelligently funny, self-deprecating, very often grounded in social realism, and relatably/inspiringly human.
I'll have to at least watch a few Fast Show eps as a nod to her talents/legacy/memory.
