Whoa there, using a memory stick is an undocumented extension to the RFC [http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1149.html].

Although, more seriously, being able to run to the data center to grab files faster then they could transfer over the wire has come in handy here a few times. We generally use the older Sneakernet [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sneakernet] protocols though.
Do you use Paper E-Mail [http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/supplies/a4db/] as well?
Paper E-Mail is kind of hazardous as it tends to cause the computer to grow limbs and attack everyone in a fifty-mile radius. The Sneakernet is needed to stop it, but once it's in the net you have to find somewhere to put it.

Hrm. My quick maths sets the speed at roughly 30kbps. Ouch.

(Note: VERY quick maths)

You go, Winston.

In the meantime, that company needs a new net provider.

I do believe they are using broadband.

Shame on you, Telkom, for making animals do all your work.

The interneat is a series of tubes... in Africa, those tubes are much smaller, which means the internetz travels through them at the same speed, but less of the internetz is recieved over time.

Very cool of the pigeon and all, but the question is, can Winston compete with the postal system now that software storage is small enough to be carried by birds?

Ouch. They really need to sort out their internet in Afric- oh right...

Honestly this would surprise me if it happened elsewhere, but since South Africa is still in development, this dosen't surprise me. Either way, they need new wiring ASAP
South Africa is considered a developed nation.

4GB in 1 hour Eight minutes + another hour = 128 minutes?

4GB = 4096MB = 32'768 Mega bits

128 minutes = 7680 seconds

32'768Mb in 7680 sec = 4.2Mbits/sec

According to THIS [http://www.itif.org/files/BroadbandRankings.pdf], USA has an average download speed of only 4.8mbps and UK at a measly 2.6mbps

I find this less a criticism of South Africa and more a criticism of the internet of internet in general with the exception of the top 11 countries in the world ranked by avg internet speed.

The top of the pile consist of South Korea and Japan with the rest mostly taken up by countries of Scandinavia and North-Western mainland Europe (Belgium, Netherlands, etc).

To spite the UK's proximity to France (17.6mbps = Fast enough to stream 1080p movies at bitrate same as a blu-ray disk) it has almost 1/7th the average download speed.

Also, in terms of cost per 1 mbps of speed we (UK) are charged almost 10 times as much as the French.

Fuck this shit. I can take this from any other country BUT NOT THE FRENCH!

An hour for 4 gigs of data, that isn't bad to be honest.
It was 1hr and 8mins to send 4% of 4GB. Not the whole thing.
I think he meant the pigeon.

Also, I think that the service provider is being deceiving with their "We gave them suggestions" claim. Not knowing what those suggestions are, I imagine them to be irrelevant to the problem.
