The closest to that mentality that I've seen was back when I was still getting Nick Kids Magazine about 13-14 years ago (which now makes me feel old) I saw a fairly big advertisement for the anime Trigun, somewhat proudly announcing that Vash refuses to shoot/kill people. Years later I watched it and realized that it was most definitely not for children.
I wonder how many kids were traumatized by watching that particular anime

It kinda depends on the show... right?
'Cause if you're talking about like.. Rugrats or Pokemon and stuff then yeah sure...
If it's a show like South park, Afro Samurai (Anime is in a way cartoons right?, Family guy and all that other mature stuff, they start shutting up...

I've actually just watched an episode of The Ricky Gervais Show (animated version). If that stuff is for kids, then get me my Spongebob t-shirt and hat because I'm only four years old!

My family. Biggest group of jerks ever when it comes to this. "Games and cartoons are for kids. You're way too old to be doing those things."

Venture Brothers would disagree with that assertion.
And so would Higurashi, Umineko, Death Note, Berserk, and Fist of the North Star.
In addition to Archer, Robot Chicken, The Boondocks, and South Park.

I think it depends on the cartoon.
If a full grown man told me he enjoyed Dora the Explorer, I'd find it very odd.
But if another man said he liked Samurai Jack, I'd say: You wanna see my Samurai Jack DVD collection?
Samurai Jack! Yay!
I get a lot of shit when people see my anime related wallpapers, they constantly tell me "that shit is for little kids.". [SUB]Annoying bastards..[/SUB]

that's actually what I do as well. Either that or a really gritty detective-mystery-esque anime like Ergo Proxy or something.

I think it depends on the state the person is..Dora the Explorer is an interesting one to watch when high so i've been told.

My dad still has that mentality a little bit. But he's been watching Avatar with my brother and I so I think he's shying away from it.

It's upsetting whenever I hear people say cartoons are just for kids. As an animation major some people have told me that what I'm doing is childish. It's just an American stigma that's not going to go away any time soon.

Japan seems to have it right. Since animation is their main source of quality entertainment a lot of animated shows have been made that appeal to adults and not just because of the inclusion of adult themes. Shows like Baccano!, Durarara!, Higurashi, Soul Eater and Gundam can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It's just up to them to overcome the stigma and give shows like this a shot.

Back then, cartoons like Flinstones and Jetsons weren't specifically meant for kids. The shows focused mainly on Fred Flinstone and George Jetson and how they went through problems dealing with work and family. How many of you can honestly say that you knew exactly what was going on halfway throughout the show at the age of 5 and still showed interest in it? Even cigarette sponsors had advertisement on the show back then.

Some of my friends say this about anime ... but they will happily watch Family Guy, and say "it's different".

Ever met someone or a group with that mentality?

I honestly havent.
not lately. I tend to stay away from those people.
or show them "Bible Black" then I wait to see if they feel the same afterward.
Oh dear lord I remember that Hentai!
I was like "Oh, what's this"
Words can not describe the level of "wtf" that was going through my mind.
good ol family fun.

I never looked at cartoons the same again.

people like that are scoped
just disprove them with 2 words 'family' and 'guy'
if they show that to their children they have some problems
