A guy walks up to me, hands me a tag, and the exact change for the item (It's a Dollar Store, makes it real easy for exact change). I say "Ok what's this tag for?" just kind of confused, and he says "Socks.....I'm wearing them" in a super serious tone. That was really it, but it left me with some questions. Namely: Why did he need socks that bad? Why did he have to put them on at that exact moment? Did he just sit down in the aisle, remove his shoes, and put them on in the middle of people? What happened to his old socks? Etc.
I've had the same thing happen to me multiple times, sometimes the machines at certain stores just won't recognize a specific card for one reason or another, possibly a scratch on the card that our machines can't work around. Didn't happen to me, but my friend worked at Zellers for a while. She claimed that a lady had walked in wearing nothing but a towel, removed the tags from a full set of clothing, put them on, paid for the clothes (from the wallet she apparently stored in her butt) and left the towel behind.Furioso said:

The machines would give a different message for when there was a read error and when the card is declined or has an insufficient balance. The screen said that the credit limit was reached, so I was pretty certain that it wasn't a problem on our end.Furioso said:

Let's see, I had a guy from the neighboring store haze me on my first day. I didn't know he worked nearby at the time and he just kept ordering random stuff in the thickest and most unintelligible indian accent possible until he finally started laughing and told me he was just having a laugh.
My favorite customer call was from a legitimately irate customer who had ordered a half-decaf coffee (no I don't get it either, I guess they still want SOME caffeine?) and had received a cup half full of decaf coffee. It was very hard to get off the line before I started laughing at her misfortune.
Another good one was a customer called and complained at me for 10 minutes before she let me get a word in edgewise. Now, the store I was working had two drive through lanes, and she had had a problem with a drive through order. So I ask which drive through she went to so we could find out who needed some correction on the matter. She said "what do you mean which drive through, you only have one." After going back and forth like this several times, with this woman getting even more angry, I asked "just to confirm, you did go to the Tim Horton's on , right?" Dead silence on the other end of the line for a moment. She then sputtered something incoherent and hung up. 15 minutes of getting ranted at and she called the wrong damn store! I would have been angry if it wasn't so funny.

I've got a couple of stories. I once had an old woman who thought I was gay simply because of where I work give me a five minute lecture about how being gay is wrong.
I should clarify, I'm a guy and I work in a shop that sells ladies' shoes and jewellery.
I also had another person come in and ask to see everything we had in a black boot. There were about 50 out on the shelves at the time.
However, the most annoying one happened last week. Now I know that customers don't have to buy every shoe they try on, but this woman had come in every day that week to hem and haw over the same pair of shoes. It was 6:20 on saturday (we're meant to close at 6) and I was the only staff member left in the shop, so I had to close up and this woman had been making me run up and down the stairs for the last half hour getting different sizes and shoes her, and she kept coming back to the same pair she had been divided on all week. Since I've only been in the job about 3 or 4 weeks, I couldn't really tell her to fuck off in case she came back and told my boss. Then after being in two minds all week and making me turn the entire shop upside down for her, do you know what she said? She said "Actually, I think I'll just leave them".
That was the day I learned that there are some people who just won't buy the shoes. If I had had a goblin slave-worker in the back of the shop to craft her the most perfect pair of shoes in existence out of magical obsidian and his own tears she still wouldn't have bought them.

I work in a gas station/store, I see the ugly side of PUBLIC A LOT! I have had my few fair shares of rude, borderline raging customers, to the plain out weird. I'll start with the dreaed never happy, comes in ALL the time, angry LITTLE OLD LADY. Anyone who has worked in public know what I am talking about.
This little old lady always came in and would want a car wash everytime. Now our car wash is self-serve, you get a code from the cashier, enter it at the terminal, drive in, PARK, car wash does the rest. OK, she gets her car wash, goes to the car wash, not three minutes later, she come back in, (like always), "Damn thing doesn't work, give me my damn money."
Of course i give her the money, but she does something different today, normally she leaves when i give her the money back, but this time she want a bottle of water. She says (lol) " i want a bottle of water."
"Ok..." I said "what brand, and size, we have many mam." She walks to the cooler in the back grabs a bottle of water and stomps up to the counter, slams the water down,I ring her up. Now, the water she picked out was right next to same size but different brand water for 89 cents. The one she has picked up is 99 cents, which with tax is $1.06 which i tell her.
She argued with me for a bit until I showed her the difference to which she replied " Well I don't want the fucking thing!" and THREW the water bottle at me and ran out.
Later in the week she came back in and I called the cops on her and they arrested her for assualt from earlier. Some poeple forget that everthing they do in that store is on camera and recorded! Talk about KARMA!!!
