So I really enjoy the Castleroid genre, but I've noticed a pretty serious problem with it. There are Zelda clones, both 2d and 3d platformers all take from Mario, most RPGs, I think it can be safely said, work on the formula established and perfected by the Final Fantasy games, but I have yet to see games, for better or for worse, that clone the style of Metroid or post-SoTN-Castlevania.

Does anyone know of any other games that use this style well? And if I may be picky, I am pretty picky about having an in-game map, so use that as a guideline if you must. I have access to virtually every console and it's entire library except Xbox.

Before it's posted, yes, I know about Shadow Complex, but for a variety of reasons, I will not be purchasing it.

Hmm, I always called it Metroidvania personally.

Anyways, while they aren't clones of the sub-genre, I would at least classify the following as working in the sub-genre.

Wonder boy 3: The Dragon's Trap
Megaman ZX
Cave Story
