Cathartic and said word's meaning?

From what I can gather from videoshere and posts in the forum cathartic means something that is much more enjoyable then it should be? Am I correct in this assumption? And if no a real meaning would be greatly appreciated.

On another note, a couple of years ago we had a course in Greek dramaturgy and catharsis cropped up quite a lot. It's really one of those things I've been glad to have learned along with dramatic irony. Now if only I could make people understand nemesis I would be happy.
