Have you ever bought a game just for the cathartic potential? You know, not because it's good, or fun, but just a way to blow of steam. Finishing the game is completely optional. Completely optional. Give me your stories! Here's a few I've done:

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand: I bought this game simply so I could have the chance to KILL 50 CENT in a number of hilarious and repetetive ways. I've yet to finish it.

Elite Beat Agents: Enough said.

Katamari Damacy: Do you know how much modding a PS2, and then importing a US-only title COSTS? But playing the Cow level over-and-over-and-over ad naseaum is totally worth it.

God of War is the ultimate cathartic experience. 'Nuff said.

EDIT: Actually, God of War is both fun and good, so I'm not sure it fits your criteria :)

Nah, I it can be fun AND good. But you had to have bought it just for a reason to relax.

I bought Burnout Paradise just so i could create massive wrecks.... and i was dissappointed by the smash wreck thing.... it wasn't very good... in fact, compared to Revenge it was terrible. But crashing into people is still fun.

Prototype.
Use the armor and equip either the claws or the blade arm, put on some heavy metal, jumping into an infected zone and start eviscerating things. Alternatively, I sometimes impersonate a soldier and simply beat the zombies to death.

Red Faction: Guerrilla

Destroying buildings is ridiculously fun.
As long as you don't do missions other than blow shit up, I agree with you.

I think cathartic few times describes better any other experience than playing Everyday Shooter [http://www.everydayshooter.com/], the amazing game created just by one man alone, Jonathan Mak.
Except killing Nazis.
Or undead Nazis.

It's not in the sense of "I'm so mad I'm going to assault some digital people," but I really like Fable 2 as an easy-going, pretty, EASY way to relax. It also seems like a lite, 3-D take on traditional adventure gaming, which to a child of the early 90s, always means fun.

Yes, my Hoveround is working great, thank you. That nice man stayed for HOURS to make sure I knew how it worked...!

This, but without the metal (oh god my poor ears) or infected (I prefer using the New Game Plus to slaughter innocents by the literal hundreds.)
Stop ninja'ing me accidentally on threads we're both posting on because they have low numbers! People are going to think we're dating or something!

OP im gunna have to say FarCry 2. Its relaxing to just ride around in the vehicles, regardless of if your being shot at. Its relaxing to just cruise the jungle or the savanna.

Prototype's probably the epitome of this.
I almost said that, but then I remember the fucking military pests. They are easy to kill, but damn if they arent annoying.

9 I like story.
What does this mean?

OT: Prototype: grab an old man, consume him, run up a skyscraper and do a flying elbow drop onto a car, making it explode. Then do a karate kick right into an oncoming helicopter, stealing it at the last second, then fly to a military base, consume the commander, accuse an ally of being you in disguise, then just call in an airstrike to level the place. So many ways to dick around, so little time.
9 is German for no, or at least the silly way I do it and I am saying I buy games for there story's.
