Allow me to provide some background detail. I've been interested in Sonic Generations since I knew it existed. I really enjoyed both Colours and 3+Knuckles, something most people will most likely tell me is impossible but I've decided to ignore them in advance. Having the two mixed together is an experiment I'm really hoping pays off for Sonic Team, if only so they have a swan-song to euthanise the IP on rather than a shaky cover of 'Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?'

Likewise, I've been pretty interested in Cave Story 3D, partly for hipster cred and partly because it'll be easier for me to buy, so I can support the devs, than all the other ports. It's also another experiment I'd like to see the results of. I mean, a beloved 'retro' classic in 3D? Travesty, right? I can only hope otherwise.

I've already decided that since they're about the same price ($50 Australian for Cave Story, about the same for Sonic over Steam, the rumours were true thankfully enough), I'll pre-order one and get the other with Christmas money. That should also leave enough Christmas money left over to get some games to play next year, when I'm only buying Bioshock Infinite. So I decided to ask you guys:

Which one do I get first, and which do I hold off on?

(Note: I don't know how much Sonic Generations on 3DS costs, but probably more than the others, so it'll take a large majority for me to consider it as an option. Also, Skyrim, Modern Warfare 3, Mario Land 3D and Assassin's Creed Revelations don't interest me much at all, and the price of all of them doesn't help, so once again I'll need a large majority.)

Edit: This goddamn website accidentally my poll. Guess I'll have to collate everything manually.

Huh, I thought Cave Story was free. Just get Cave Story on PC.
Already did, but I'd rather get one of the 'enhanced' versions too. Like I said, hipster points and it looks like a very awesome reimagining.

I will likely be one of the few to suggest Sonic.

You already have a copy of Cave Story. And everything that has been released about Sonic Generations so far suggests that it will be the long-awaited return to glory for the blue blur that apparently according to SOME fans (*-_-) Colors and Sonic 4 were not. If Sega/Dimps are to continue down the right path with the franchise, we need to show them with sales that this is what we want, and as is being shown by the business practices of several publishers, apparently new launch sales are all they look at.

But ultimately it's your decision. Get whichever one interests you more first.

I'd wait for reviews, that's what I'm doing, Cave Story 3D already has one out from Nintendo Life, but I didn't think it was very informative. I'm not sure what games I'm getting besides Skyrim and Zelda this year yet. I think my brother will get the two Mario 3DS games and the new Layton, so those are covered. Not sure what else he'll get, maybe L.A. Noire Complete or Kirby. The two versions of Sonic Generations, Cave Story 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, and SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked are the only other "new" games I'm wanting.

I don't have a job or anything so the holidays are about the only time I get big games, and I'm kind of wanting a Kindle Fire this year (Although my birthday's in January so I could wait until then, but I need to save some cash for Mass Effect 3).

If you had to choose, I would personally recommend Cave Story overall.

But I would personally buy both, if possible. Speaking of which, I'm going to a Steam buy spree tonight. And Sonic Generations was included in that.

Tonight is a really good night to buy Alice: Madness Returns if anyone is interested. And if anyone wants to truly be an awesome human being, they will buy Recettear and Chantelise. Carpe Fulgur/Easy Game Station deserves ALL of your money.

Sonic is $50 AU on Steam?! Don't tell me they priced it at US$50 just for your region...

In New Zealand it's US$30, which is about $40 over here, and our dollar is nothing compared to yours.

Anyway, I'd say Sonic, but only because it looks like it'll satisfy some lingering nostalgia.

Actually, for me it says US$49.95, and I'd upload a screenshot but I can't do it directly from the drive and I've forgotten my Photobucket p/w.

Must be region-specific pricing. I'm only getting it because it's so cheap, but would probably pick it up later either way.

Sonic generations is "Sonic, again"

Cave Story is "Cave Story, again"
I'd go Cavestory, myself, seems like a far better thing to be able to whip out and play for 5 minutes at a time.

I played the Sonic demo on XBLA today, and how sonic controls feels natural to me just like the originals back in the day. The 3D part was fun too but ive no idea how it stacks up against other Sonics as this is my first taste of new sonic
