I will now attempt to validate the last three weeks that I spent playing Cave Story by studio pixel...

Cave Story is an Indie Freeware adventure shooter puzzle fighting flying impossible to pigeon hole game released by Studio Pixel after the millennium, it is one of the very few games that I actually played after initial completion.

The story begins with you looking at a doctor and two mysterious figures inside bubbles, which you later figure out are named Balrog and Misery. Then you catch a glimpse of the title screen and hear the music, see the main character, and are immediately drawn in for some unknown reason. The storyline itself can either be a tragedy or a comedy, depending on how you play it, and yes, there are multiple endings, the first one I got being the one where you flee like a wuss and get yelled at for doing it, and no, I don't consider that last bit a spoiler because there's no real challenge for that ending.

When you press the start button you are instantly shown a place called, and I'm not kidding, start point, you have no weapons and right next to you are two apparatuses that you will be familiar with throughout the entire game. The next part is where I got killed, and I wish I were kidding, by a spike in the floor because I pressed the wrong button. Some utter failure that you'd think I'd be accustomed to by now, but it still made me rant for a while. The next part you get a weapon called the polar star, and you've won the entire first part of the game, I'm not kidding, but the storyline, which is so good I won't even tell you anything about, makes me feel good.

The gameplay as far as I can tell only has one issue: it needs more weapons. I KNOW that it'd be stupid for me to say that, but I'd like at least a couple of possible weapon combinations, there is only one in the game... but I digress. The gameplay is GOOD, which is a lot to say for an indie game, the music is even solid despite being played on MY dated speakers. The enemy design in particular is something to enjoy, in every part of the game, there is a different enemy that can be defeated in different ways, I know that Balrog makes more than one appearance but it's nice to see a rival and therefore a motive in the game. The gameplay is perhaps the shining achievement in the game.

Next are the characters, the robot you play as is named Quote (I know that's a spoiler but if you haven't already played the game I don't think you deserve me blocking it) and he is a scout sent from the surface to murder cute little bunnies... why? Well you will have to play the game to figure that one out or maybe spend ten minutes on their fan forums. Annnyway, the only character I really hate is Curly Brace which is basically Quote's Princess Peach unrequited love yada yada yada... she might as well have the words "generally unlikeable" stamped on her forehead, she doesn't really ever show any emotion for Quote (they incidentally have souls) except for maybe one part where she gives you her air tank. In retrospect, Quote looks a bit like Mario, maybe it was meant to be a huge parody of that, but I'll never know I suppose...

Anyway I recommend this game for ANYONE, it's really that good, and you have no reason not to because it's free.

I'M SERIOUS!!! STOP READING AND PLAY IT!!!
