I'm open to listening to this mans spiel whenever he gets around to defining what "true RPG" means.

Because, quite frankly, it just sounds like PR buzz-wording designed to get fanboys excited.

Is that actually a thing? Because that's more than a bit disturbing, even if it was just the end result of poor planning.
It is indeed. First level after the prologue in the Witcher 2, the MC stumbles onto a bunch of non-humans about to be hanged, a friend of his among them. He tires to stop them, but a few of them get hung before he can, including a scantily clad elf. If you go back later, her corpse is STILL THERE! Sadly, (or not) I can't find a picture of it. I mean, I like RED (What they represent, I'm kinda meh on the Witcher games) but they need to ease up on the sex. Seriously. Sex scenes? Fine, but a little restraint would be welcome.

Knowing Witcher 2, it could simply be that they used a generic character model, because clothing like that on a woman is pretty standard in this game, but it does show why constantly having low cut tops and huge tits on every woman in a game as dark as the Witcher 2 can not work out.

EDIT: Found an image. You can see her in the back...lovely ain't it.

If it makes you feel any better, she was probably assaulted in lock-up and wasn't really thinking about her dignity when she was hauled off for execution, and the thief that was hanged was still hanging there, too. It was not unusual in older civilizations for bodies to be left around to remind the local populace who was in charge.

In addition, most of the men in that village were not wearing any trousers and the women were more or less dignified with what they wore. Unless you are talking about the whores. The whores were dressed like whores.
...That's the opposite of me feeling better. Well, I suppose there's points for realistic there, but it looks less like her clothes were torn and the guards didn't care, half of the women in witcher games just wear clothes that are that low cut. And I get the leaving them up thing, but when I see a corpse hanging from a rope, I still get uncomfortable when I see tits like that. I mean, the thief didn't have his dick out or his pants down. Could just be personal preference. I like sex and I like violence, but I like the two far away from each other.

Yeah. But there's dignified with what you do, and then there's just having every woman having a huge best and showing it off, even if it doesn't make sense for their position.

Not really a fan of that image to be honest. Sure, the arm things are creepy and all, but missing other context it's just sleezy. The aesthetic of the blood and the scythe/razor things are cool, but then to just have the character wearing underwear with legs spread makes it look more like it's already the Rule 34 version rather than the serious one.

It's just feels like they decided midway through to do 'look how sexy our game is' instead of 'look at the cool cyperpunk atmosphere'.
Not to defend the image, but it's actually pretty par for the course for the old "Cyberpunk 2020" edition of the tabletop game. Just google images of the covers of the Cyberpunk "Chromebooks" for starters.

This makes me laugh.
Has the genera really fallen so low that "true RPG" creates hype?

While I have respect for RED and their development views, I don't think they will be able to create a good RPG. (I know Witcher IPs is popular, but I dont consider that a good RPG)

"We are known for storytelling, and big game worlds,"
Oh you mean that linear, un-interactive, repetitive "world" in Witcher 2? I highly doubt it. (by repetitive I mean your always going back though points and passages excessively multiple times).
-I know Witcher 3 is going to have open world, but I won't judge until it comes out.

As for story, while it is subjective, but I found it plainly boring and unoriginal, just full of sex and foul languages; it kinda losses the point its trying to make (at least, I hope there was a point).

also, maybe the combat will include more rolling and checklists!

I'll take a look to see what its like, but I don't think its going to be anything special, let alone a "true RPG". Not to mention, everyone has a different idea and expectations for a "true RPG" so If anything, I feel this marketing ploy will only hurt them in the long run.

Unlike many other titles where each bit of news only serves to make me sadder and less excited and more worried about a game (Hitman: Absolution, Thief 4), every bit of news about this game only makes me more and more excited. I have no idea about the particular setting/ruleset (though I had a brief readup on a web site a while ago), but cyberpunk setting + RPG = insta-sale + orgasm. The fact that it's from a company with a great track record and a gamer/consumer-focussed attitude only makes me want it more.

This is one I'll pre-order, play on Day 1 with every bell and whistle. The last game I was this excited about....hmmmm. Can't think of one :-( Maybe Skyrim.

Yeah I'm with the other guys who said something similar to what I'm about to say but can't be bothered to remember their names/quote them.

What the heck does "True RPG" mean? Is it turn-based or real-time? Do we command a party or just one guy? Is it an open world or is it relatively linear? Top-down? First-person? What does it mean?

RPG is such a broad genre that even I don't know what it means to be a "true RPG" and it's my favorite genre goddammit. Is it focused on character development? Choices? Strategic gameplay? Plot?

This is making my brain hurt. I haven't played Witcher, so I don't know what to expect, but this just makes my opinion all the more ambiguous.

RPG is just such a meaningless term.
In my definition, a game isn't an RPG unless you can backstab your party members and loot their corpses.
No, its only a true RPG when you can say screw all the choices and split the party, go off the map and give the DM a brain aneurysm from having to come up with new material on the fly while burning his original campaign notes because you killed off the most important NPC for "loot".

Well maybe they're not raised in an environment where sexuality is something to be ashamed of and they just like showing off their breasts. Have you ever thought of that?

Look I agree that the breastage is a little over the top in the Witcher games, but I find it equaled out by the fact that the women who show off tend to be able to shoot massive bolts of lightning out of their fingertips.

I also think you are reading way too much into the hanging scene.
From what I know about the Witcher world, somehow I doubt that this world applies. Also, that doesn't explain why every one of them is a double D. This is more of a nitpick than anything, but it REALLY bugs me.

It's not that I have a problem with sexy women or seeing tits, the problem I always have with this is that it breaks the immersion. I mean it's hard to get emotionally invested in the world of the Witcher and how Gerald needs to clear his name when you can't find more than a few women that are actually trying to cover up their cleavage. It's especially bad when you've got people like Ves, who is supposed to be the middle age world equivalent of special forces yet she's got a low cut top that shows off cleavage. It just gets obnoxious, not saying that the Witcher is a bad game but that is freaking ANNOYING.

Oh I'm not reading anything into it. It just bugs me is all. Heck, I flat out said that they probably just used a generic character model.

True RPG as in... you make and control with lots of choice your own character(or at least the illusion of it) or turn based combat rather than an ARPG or both?

I probably shouldn't admit this because its an overreaction but I'm really in mood for some cyberpunk rpg goodness but everytime that picture just completely crushes my enthusiasm for it.

This could be cool. But I really have a problem with with stories dating themselves. I understand the temptation to tell the audience exactly where it is in time - especially since so many stories have been doing it for so long. The problem is that the date gives the story the a possibly unattainable expectation, and a certainly unnecessary burden that neither adds to the story, nor is even necessary to convey the story's message. The box has two ways already to tell us it's future without us ever seeing a date.

Blade Runner is a prime example. In the title crawl, it begins, "In the early 21st century...". Once the crawl is over there is a title card "Los Angeles November 2019" immediately preceding the now famous shot of future L.A. with fire billowing from giant towers at night before the approach to the Tyrell building. That's just five years from now. We won't have androids, or flying cars, or off-world colonies, so the expectation is unattainable and the burden is unnecessary. We already had the near future set up; we didn't need an exact time to awkwardly date the story or even the more general "early" in "early 21st century".

A story should be dated realistically only if it is occurring in the past. Star Trek works perfectly with its dates because they are "star dates" of only arbitrary meaning. The point is we know the events are happening in the future. It's not so bad if the story is very much grounded in reality and the world building can be counted on to fit the date. Otherwise it is a practice best avoided.

Imagine if this game is a mega hit or if it is adoringly embraced by a loyal cult or niche audience played for decades to come, and 2077 roles around. We'll be wondering where all the girls in shiny underwear with giant can-openers in there arms are.

I'm not familiar with the franchise... But it's CDPR, so I am very excited for this game. I love sci-fi, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Not really thrilled if leveling up takes weeks of play all day every day or crafting Items requires ages to colelct resources.

For those wondering what a "true RPG" means in the context of the quote in the article, my guess is that they mean they are trying to get it as close as possible to the Pen and Paper work as they can. Which would mean character creation, alot of choices with consequences, the usual item loot, upgrading and no specific class system. Basicly think of it as a mix between Shadowrun Returns and Fallout New Vegas in terms of two RPGs which combined would be close to the ideal solution. And by that i mean that you can level up and build your character in a way you want, with every option being relatively viable (though perhaps not as perfectly suited for specific situations) and the ability to literally kill everyone, or make friends with bad guys and the like. At least thats my hope.

Other than that, i kind of hate the lack of proper info aside from a few token statements ala "we are working on it still" because its one of the few games i am actually looking forward to, so the teasing without any concrete information, even if its just general ideas, is irritating.
