Censorship?

In this crazy world is it really that weird that our governments would opt to censorship? With the masses pushing the limits of decency further daily and the people who take up the "moral" opposition of this push tend to be fanatical at best and tyrannical at worst. Where are lines anymore? Where are we going? Is this proof of of the totalitarian governments written about in 1984 and V for Vendetta or is proof of the world falling to hell as written Christian scriptures? Finally, could it just be that governments around the world are taking an interest in protecting their people from needless debauchery? What do you think?

I think that the governments are finaly taking an interest but censorship is now frowned upon and they will meet with heavy opposition from the masses if they try to take censorship anyware

Censorship is rather oppressive and annoying, and generally brought about by all the whiny soccer-moms who complain that they don't want their darling angels to hear a bad word or see something naughty on TV. It's life, lady. Shit happens, people say bad things. If you hide little Timmy from it now, he's going to think of it as taboo which will only make him do it more. Now quit being an overprotective worrywort and let your kid grow up. /short rant

No, no to censorship! Seriously, if you don't like people who push societies decency factor don't get involved... Give being different a chance, pop in a Wednesday 13 CD, and go bother someone.

I see what your saying and your right to a degree. You don't think that it's a little sickening that there is such easy access to all of the sick things there are to be found online. I mean little kids can wander in to the wrong thing on TV or online and be messed up for the rest of their lives because of it. Is it necessarily the case that protecting a kid from seeing something early on is really creating a taboo in the kids life. Kids don't understand things the same way we do, so it only makes sense that you would want to keep your kid from coming into contact with something before his/her time.

I'm more of be an active parent or don't spit out a kid. It you don't want Timmy to watch anything but good cristion tv. Block out the other channel. Also be a parent not there friend. I will search my kids room. I will question them if they go out. They also know i will send there little rear to a milltery school if I catch them sneaking out. That all said I also know when it time to pull back. If they are making all A's and want to stay up tell mid night that fine with me. They make F there in there room tell they make at least a B. Again all that said I know everyone works. If you don't have the time to be a good parent don't bother. Stop blaming everyone else.

I wanna elect this guy to be our next president.

Anyway, censorship is a croc of shit. The responsibility of the understanding and dealing with of trash, smut, curse, spot, and bloody violence is to the viewer. It is not for certain companies or our government to gut every program like an overzealous fish-cleaner. Alot of programs are also censored by absolute retards, ruining the shows entirely.

The FCC take their policies and blow it out their ass.

True, to a point. What I'm getting at is less "kids can handle it" and more "quit pointing fingers at the tele and do your damn job as a parent". That children can get into nasty things at a young age is undeniable, look at Earthbound's creator, who stumbled into a XXX theatre and overheard dialog that later served as inspiration for Giygas's fractured and disturbing lines. But that's what locking channels and keeping an eye on where your kid is going online is for. It makes no sense to censor something adults are absolutely fine with seeing because Wilma doesn't feel like messing with the TV's security settings.

And the taboo thing was directed more at swear words. It's a word. Word's don't do shit. Quit acting like it's the end of the world because someone dropped an F bomb and get on with your life.

Censorship can stuff itself up some wowser's dark and rotten bunghole. I don't appreciate being told by a bunch of elderly people what I find offensive. I think I'm old enough and ugly enough to make my own decisions, thank you very much. It's one of the privileges of being an adult.

Censorship is bad, thats all there is too it. If its needed that says more about us than the content at issue.

As a seller of games, I usually include a warning to parents about content of said games AND make DAMN sure that those guys know exactly what their kid is buying. For example if you're buying God of War for a 5 year old I'm going to make very sure you realize it's one of the bloodiest games on the market. However, this is not censorship but rather a cry to the parent to do their job. We all saw what happened when a nip slipped on national tv. The instant reaction was that the next two years would have very boring half time shows (including some bands that most of the viewers might not have heard of). I should get to censorship before it's to late.

Anyway Censorship is usually associated with tyranny. Because of this association, most civilizations will go to great lengths to make sure that certain media are kept free of it. Probably the media most associated with censorship and the crusade against it is the written word. Seriously you can WRITE anything and still be covered against legal charges in the States assuming it's primarily fantasy. Television and Video games are censored so as not to provoke the wrath of the uninformed mob. Video Games at least have the form of censorship that is market driven rather than government. If it has offensive content to anyone (usually meaning that you can rip somebody in half and drink their blood from their skull, but one boob pops up and your a goner) it will be rated AO and thus all retailers will not stock it at all. Television is more controlled by the FCC. Do I agree with this stance? To a degree, I personally wouldn't want any child of mine to see something like Total Recall uncut when they were 6. And while there have been attempts to create things like v chips and such (for the net too) children, being the resourceful things that they are ALWAYS find loopholes, or the filtering software is so draconian it's not funny.

I think however that the Internet being a digital information, pleasure, fantasy, what have you, network is in itself somewhat self correcting in terms of a crusader trying to force a censor on something. The two best examples of this are the FoxNews "Sexbox" crap and what's been occurring with regards to Jack Thompson.

I agree with censoring where appropriate. Adults should have free reign of what they want to subject themselves too.

I believe things should be censored to protect children though and I believe it's the responsibility of all adults to uphold this.

It's not entirely the media's influence though the responsibility also falls on the parent. I hate it when I see parents swearing at their little kids.

So what I'm seeing here is more that people want to see more education regarding the things that are being censored. For example, making it a must to describe to parents what their kids are buying and watching. For most it seems only the deep end of censorship is wrong. Where as censorship by age is completely appropriate.

You can't censor reality. Of course in saying that there are certain things that should be censored but not speech, speech should never be censored.
