Why are there no more CG-s in games. Those made you feel omnipotent and powerful, they were truly epic. Now there are handful of games with cinematics.Do you think they should come back

Of course, where they're done well. But either full CG or made from ingame footage works as long as they're suitably epic and engaging. One thing I've started to notice about RPG's...is the crappy still shot 'cinematics' and maybe a text roll sometimes being used. Cheap bas....grr...

CG cinematics are all well and good as long as they're not used deceptively [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko9xC6TMdiw]. There are technical limitations always to good looking games, but gameplay I find is more important. Insuch, I love how control is almost never taken away in Half Life 2, leaving talkative and complex scenes as scripted sequences.

Remember the bridge collapse at the beginning of Half-Life 2 Episode 2? That was epic. And made of CG cinematics.

I love cinematics but this day of age, quicktime events and having control of your persons head is what everyone wants.

Correction: Cinematic Physics. Those pieces of wood were not actually interacting with each other. If you could stand where they would fall, they would go straigh though you; their animation paths were pre-set, like the walking nodes of Alyx or Kleiner in the talkie-scenes. Also, it wasn't CG because it was rendered real-time (as in during gameplay. It's rendered real time. Pixar Movies is CG because they render it into a video and doesn't have to be rendered every time you play it.)
I'll stop cutting you up there.

the reason CG movies have been phased out is mainly due to the standard of gameplay graphics. The difference between the gameplay graphics, and what could conceivably be done with fully rendered CGI sequences is just so low in most cases these days that the developers would just rather take any money that would be spent developing CGI scenes, and just improving the rest of the game.

There are still plenty of cut scenes, some of which feel like CGI, and there are things like in Half-Life 2 where CGIs are mixed almost seamlessly into the actual gameplay.

I'll always remember those fantastic (at least, back then) cinematics from Starcraft- they were all on such a huge scale, it seemed, and even now they're still decent!
Then again, those cinematics served different purposes in Starcraft by advancing the plot or just making people remember that the game they were playing was fantastic, since the actual game part could do very little to put those things out there...
I look over those SC cinematics fondly (particularly the one where poor Fenix's psi-blades burn out)

Real-time, in-game graphics are now so good, you probably won't notice what's CG and what's in-game anyway.
